Hey everyone this is my first post to Snipers Hide. I am very passionate about long range shooting and currently building my first rifle totally from scratch with a smith/builder. I am building an AI in 300wm using a Stiller Tac300 action with a helical fluted Hart Barrel (to arrive the last week in Oct) that is 6 button groove 10-1 twist. My goal is to hunt and shoot with this gun out to 1000yds but try try try to get proficient out to 1500 with it. I am pretty damn a good shot and tend to be pretty cerebral as I work in science and have a gear head brain. I have shot many long range guns .338, .375, and .50 but this will be my first personal long action weapon that is of significant cost to me.

I need an optic that replicates this quality that I can afford but not going over the 2k or so mark. Currently I am considering in order:
-Vortex Razor 5-20
-Nightforce 5.5-22

I like over 20x scopes and currently have a few under 1k optics that I use for my .308's.

I just cant just cant go AO or SandB. Just cant afford more than what I have already spent or am planning on for optics. A little help will go a long way guys! Thanks!

You are comparing a FFP scope, Razor, and a SFP scope, NF. What do you want? Both are good scopes.

Re: Best Optic for me under 2000.00??? Little Help

The Razor is FFP and has a zero stop. You will not find a better warranty either. I am very pleased with mine. You should easily be able to find one for under $2k.

A smarter option is to skip on both of these options and go for a Super Sniper 5-20X50HD. Really good value in terms of cost/benefit. If I was starting from scratch again, this would probably be my scope along with some seekins rings.

Thanks guys! Thats all great info! I appreciate you! I have never researched the premier but do know of them. I have not considered them for some reason. Cost probably. I KNOW NF is proven but I do like to try things a little different and that is the reason for my strong interest in the Vortex. I know the warranty is great and I like that an american company (japanese glass supposedly)is trying to really work their way up into top tier stuff. Everyone and their brother has NF but damn if it isnt an awesome product. There is a WHOLE lot more NF pre owned on the market than Vortex as well and that is a consideration.

Does the Premier match up with the S and B and American Optics?

What Rob is saying is that comparing the Razor with a 5.5-22 NF is not apples to apples. The Razor is a first focal plane scope, meaning that the reticle subtensions remain constant regardless of the optic's magnification level. The effect is that the reticle appears smaller, more compact at low power and grows as the magnification is increased.

A reticle in a second focal plane scope remains the same size over the entire range of magnification, but the subtension marks are only valid for one magnification level (usually max power). This means that you must have your scope on max power to range targets or dial in adustments, which is not always ideal if you need a larger field of view or if you have a strong mirage effect from a hot day, hot barrel, or both. Because of this, FFP scopes cost more.

The more apt "apples to apples" comparison would be a 5-20 Razor HD to a 3-15 NF F1 because then both scopes are FFP. In this regard, the razor has more top level magnification, but the NF has more on the bottom end. Also, the NF F1 is more expensive than the Razor. I believe that the Razor is a better value.

ahhhh yes i got you. I recently educated myself on this. There was a great article on Snipers hide i believe.... Anyway thank you very much. I will probably get the Vortex. But anyone feel free to please talk me out of it.

Re: Best Optic for me under 2000.00(Bushnell HDMR)

Give a good, long look at the Bushnell HDMR with either a Horus 59 reticle or a TMR reticle. Personally I prefer the HORUS 59. Usually scopes with a Horus reticle are much more money than Bushnell's SRP of $1,500.

This is a very rugged, lifetime warranty scope with a 34 mm. tube. Lots of good reviews on it.

Re: Best Optic for me under 2000.00(Bushnell HDMR)

Vortex Razor EBR-2B, and Bushnell HDMR G2 would be my two recommendations. I have one of each and really like them both.

Re: Best Optic for me under 2000.00(Bushnell HDMR)

I had a Razor but I sold it to buy a NF 5.5-22x50mm ZS HS MOAR. IMO, the NF is a better scope but lacks the option of FFP at this time. If you don't need FFP it's a no brainer.

Re: Best Optic for me under 2000.00(Bushnell HDMR)

I'd say take a look at the Bushnell HDMR. For the money, the Bushnells offer the most amount of features in the least expensive package. Great quality optics and well under your budget.

Re: Best Optic for me under 2000.00(Bushnell HDMR)

If you are looking to spend around $2,000... I say take a hard look at USO. You can get many of their scopes on here for around that price. They are FFP, their warranty is amazing, and the scopes are just straight awesome!

I hate to slap you with another option, but I splurged and bought one, and now I want one on every one of my rifles.

Either way though, you won't go wrong. They are all great glass and will get you out to and beyond the distances that you are intending on shooting.

Re: Best Optic for me under 2000.00??? Little Help

There are many options.. If you look around on here, and are patient, many 3.2-17s will pop up and are top notch scopes in my opinion. They will give you all the zoom you need to reach out to 1000+. USO is a great scope, they are FFP, they have great service behind them, and they are also made in the USA.

Sound likes your key to success in my eyes.

I got my 3.2-17x USO here on this forum used, for well under $2000 shipped. It has all the bells and whistles - illumination, EREK knob, reticle I wanted. After getting it, I called USO and they had me send it in for a check-up. It came back all cleaned and with repacked turrets, just like I was getting a brand new scope.

Re: Best Optic for me under 2000.00(Bushnell HDMR)

I'll be honest I didn't read everything that everyone suggested but I would say look at the new Bushnell Tactical line and get an HDMR with the H59 horus reticle. The Horus reticles are what the marine scout snipers use and are amazingly fast for hold overs. On top of that it is a FFP scope which is perfect for milling goes all the way down to 3.5-21x50. zero stop is included as well with locking turrets. You can't ask for more and full retail is about 1700. Take the rest of the money and buy you an good LaRue mount for the scope.
