Go hit the pawn shops. I like the older 6- and 7-digit receivers and find most of mine in a local shop. I have never really noticed a good or bad time to buy them- they seem to available at any time of year, especially after deer season. A lot of times there will be a couple of Rem SA's for sale for under $350. I have even picked up a nice, older ADL with dinged up wood for $350 out the door.

Assuming you want it for a custom build, this is your best option if you're trying to save a dime. Other wise, just buy the cheapest 700 Remington makes, and go for it. I too prefer the older actions, and since I'm going to scrap the bolt, and recut any worn surface, I don't care about round count. Besides, most of those older ones were used very little as hunting rifles to begin with any how. Best of luck.

Assuming you want it for a custom build, this is your best option if you're trying to save a dime. Other wise, just buy the cheapest 700 Remington makes, and go for it. Where I live I could not find a sa at any pawn shop so I went to academy. They have sa and la adl's for $380. That's always an option if you can't find an older action.

I've picked up two at the gun shows. Both .243 youths in excellent condition and the prices were $315 and $330 otd. I've also bought two brand new blued actions w/triggers from Great Scott Shooters for $400 ea.

Brownells or like it has already been stated just buy one used and strip it down. You may be able to sell off the parts you don't want if the rifle is in good shape.

If yor going to true it up for a custom build, its cheaper to just buy a Stiller, which is must nicer than a trued Remmy.

I have a Remington 700 rifle Russell at SSC built for me that he trued the action on and rebarreled. It's great and I can't say enough good about him and his work!

Well, if you buy a Remington action, have it trued, replace the bolt with a PTG, instal a side bolt release, and refinish it all, for an apples-to-apples comparison, you are pretty close to the price of a new Stiller (esp. if you can get one from the annual group buy they have on here). You can get a Stiller in a week from a vendor on the Hide, and it will also hold it's value better.
That said, cheapest way to get a new Remington action is to buy a youth ADL from a big box sporting goods store like Academy for $350 or so and part it out. Brownell's sometimes sells actions but at ~$500 that's a poor value.

You would be better off spend that money on a good two-stage trigger or reworking an old style flatback Remington trigger if this is a duty weapon.
If people who buy custom actions want to be different or need a special feature that a custom action offers I'm all for it. But do not try to sell someone on a custom telling them they are somehow getting a better performing action by going custom because they are absolutely not and the custom cannot shoot any better.
Now if you think resale value us important I suggest you look into California real estate which has outperformed custom action bolt guns significantly in the last few decades. The real estate advice is much better advice to give than to say a custom action will hold its value better.

I never said it would shoot better, and neither did Special Deliver -- you put those words in our mouths. I agree the barrel and chambering are more important. I shoot F-Class with a bunch of loose sloppy Savages and the action is not what causes me to drop points.
However, it's not inconceivable that members of this site who want to blueprint a Remington will want to have numerous other features or upgrades added not related to accuracy. My only point is that the more you have done to a Remington, the worse of a deal it is over just buying an aftermarket action. Of course the flip side is that with a Remington you can do more or less customization, whereas with a custom you are paying for all the features a particular action comes with whether you want it or not.
A Tac30 is $950 MSRP from Stiller with a recoil lug. Bugholes is selling them for $900. I have bought two from the annual group buys here for less that either price.
Let's say you buy a Remington action for around $350. Add $250 (avg.) to have a gunsmith true it up. Add another $25-50 for an aftermarket recoil lug. That's probably the minimum that people will do to "blueprint" a Remington, and yet you already have ~$625-650 into it. If that's all you do and all you want to do, then yeah, no point in spending ~$300 more for a Tac30.
However, if you're reading this website, you might want a cool tactical bolt knob, so that's another $150 avg. installed, at which point you have $775-$800 into it. From the pictures I've seen, that's very common. Alternately, a PT&G bolt (without any extras like fluting) and aftermarket knob will set you back anywhere from $150 (2-piece, traditional bolt knob) to $220 (1-piece plus knob) plus installation and small parts like M-16 style extractor, etc, at which point you are right at or over $1,000.
So, even without an aftermarket bolt or any the other features that differentiate an aftermarket action from a trued Remington, that trued Remington can easily cost around $800, within spitting distance of the cost of new Tac30. If you have even more done to the Remington, you'll probably end up spending more.
What the relative resale prices of Stillers and Remington actions have to do with the price of California real estate I don't know, since we weren't talking about California real estate.

Yes some people here on the Hide take a lot of pride in their dodads like the clip on plastic tactical bolt knobs advertised here on the Hide. Features that add noting to reliable repeatable precision shot placement add no value to me but that's just me YMMV. I'll trade a side bolt release and fluted bolt for a good two-stage Huber trigger any day.

Yes I agree that if a buyer wanted a lot of features which add nothing to the accuracy, function or reliability of a rifle a moderately priced custom action might almost be price competitive with a Remington action with every possible feature added to it. But like Japanese cars none of these "features" add to the function or reliability of rifle.
Based on your post it sounds like you agree that as I posted a Remington action will cost less and leave the buyer more money to buy stuff like a decent barrel, stock or trigger.

So basically you are saying that if a shooter wanted the best shooting action and only cared about shooting performance the cost difference using your pricing is about $300 less for a Remington action that will shoot and perform just as well as the custom action. My point exactly, the Remington action will shoot just as well and cost less. Why spend more to add features to the action when they don't do anything to make the rifle shoot better? Looks? Tacticool? You pick. Which leads us to:

That was in response to your comment that a rifle based on a custom action will hold its resale value better than a rifle based on a trued Remington action. But this is not always the case, look at the used TacOps rifles listed here on the hide which typically sell for the same price and more than a new TacOps rifle. But for the most part custom rifles even custom rifles with custom actions make very poor investments and generally depreciate just like cars and other durable goods and typically do not appreciate like California real estate does.

Yes I agree that if a buyer wanted a lot of features which add nothing to the accuracy, function or reliability of a rifle a moderately priced custom action might almost be price competitive with a Remington action with every possible feature added to it. But like Japanese cars none of these "features" add to the function or reliability of rifle.
Based on your post it sounds like you agree that as I posted a Remington action will cost less and leave the buyer more money to buy stuff like a decent barrel, stock or trigger.

So basically you are saying that if a shooter wanted the best shooting action and only cared about shooting performance the cost difference using your pricing is about $300 less for a Remington action that will shoot and perform just as well as the custom action. My point exactly, the Remington action will shoot just as well and cost less. Why spend more to add features to the action when they don't do anything to make the rifle shoot better? Looks? Tacticool? You pick. Which leads us to:

That was in response to your comment that a rifle based on a custom action will hold its resale value better than a rifle based on a trued Remington action. But this is not always the case, look at the used TacOps rifles listed here on the hide which typically sell for the same price and more than a new TacOps rifle. But for the most part custom rifles even custom rifles with custom actions make very poor investments and generally depreciate just like cars and other durable goods and typically do not appreciate like California real estate does.

They are a paid vendor over on accurate shooter. You might be able to find some feedback there. I personally haven't heard anything negative.

You guys are damn lucky to find SA Remingtons in your pawn shops, and even more lucky that they aren't priced at full retail. Moved here to Georgia several months ago from Colorado. In Colorado we had the gunsmithing schools to do battle with so there were NEVER any SA R700s in the pawn shops and gunshops. Those students always had them bought or had deals with the shops to buy them as soon as they came in.
Here in Georgia (Fort Benning area) it seems the few pawn shops feel that their used guns are worth retail prices.
I've pretty much resolved to not buy another R700 until Remington gets back to building proper firearms again with a worthwhile fit and finish. What they are making these days is absolute shit. I'll buy old blued R700s all day long though!
