Best Rem700 for AICS

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

The Remington SPS Varmint or Tactical, depending on your preference on barrel length. From what I read, the different options of the Remington 700 are all the same action, just different stocks. The SPS Varmint/Tactical run for about $600 and since you are going to immediately sell the stock, you basically get what you would have gotten if you went with a more expensive Remington 700.

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

I just picked up a remington SPS varmint at Cabelas. Just ordered a A2 stock, having the bolt fluted and a badger bolt knob put on. Now I am trying to pick up a good 20 MOA rail, and trying to decide what scope to top it off with. Right now it is topped off with a Konus. Good clear lense, just want a GOOD scope. I bought this to customize to my likings. I have been getting ideas here. And i haven't even shot the DAMN thing yet.

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

If you want to keep it "stock" other than the "stock" I would say the 5r. If you plan to upgrade the barrel and stuff SPS varmint/tactical either one just pick your barrel length. I would get a trigger while I was swaping stocks I just dont care for the Xmark.

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

You probably won't see much difference in accuracy between a 5R and one of the varmint models. I'd say the biggest advantage the 5R has is resale value.

Go for the cheapest one you can get in .308

I am willing to bet you will see a big difference. For starters 5R 1-11.25twist sps 1-12, the chamber is cut different too I think same reamer as used in a 40x. The 5R with 175smks will put 5 into .4 if not .3 at 100yds. I don't think you could do that with an Sps Varmint. I you don't want to rebarrel and want dead nuts accuracy and a gun that will shoot point of aim for 125 rounds without cleaning and not burn out untill 5000 rnds or more than go with the 5R.

You have obviously never owned both to compare, or either for that matter.

To the OP,
Most of the 5r prestige is hype. They do shoot great, but not $500 or more better IMHO. As bsp stated, the resale is better, so if you are not planning on keeping it buy the 5r.

YMMV

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

5R, XCR, LTR, or PSS the SPS tactical makes a great combo also I picked one up off another hider a while back and it shot very very well. swapped the SPS out for an XCR. All depends on your budget. low end SPS tactical, mid 5R or XCR, high end GAP or Roscoe

XCR in AICS Tan Sold stock and replaced with A5

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

Agree,
Go with what you budget can afford. Remember too, you will have a lot of things you will still have to or want to buy.

Probably want a replacement trigger, a 10 round mag, scope, scope rings, bases and so on. Go with a good one piece base and high rings.

Good luck and follow up with some range reports.

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

out of all the options the XCR is the only one that comes with a 40X trigger, some LTR's did but hard to find. The rest have the xmark pro and its not that great. My 40x breaks great out of the box and haven't found a need to adjust it. You get the advantage of a stainless gun with a pretty nice finish on it also. When I sold my SPS tactical I sent it out with the XCR LR stock. I think he then sold it for $200 or maybe $175.

While the trigger is not a Jewell or CG you might not find the need to replace it right off the bat. The last generation of Rem triggers are btter than the Xmark line.

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

I have the 5R in an AICS and love it. Sold the stock for $200 to cover the cost of the Jewell HVR.

However, as was mentioned, if you plav to re-barrel anyway, you could save yourself some cash and get something much less expensive (or even used) since all you need is the action.

Has anyone gone through the trouble to support that with real data?

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

You can get a SPS Varmint on gunbroker for about $500 + shipping if you keep your eyes open for a good deal. I paid $525 for mine recently, and I'm very happy with it.

I may have considered getting a 5R, but I plan to shoot my barrel out and then replace it with a Krieger down the road.

if you are set on that type of barrel, just get a rem700 bdl from academy for $340, and have a mike rock barrel installed, and still never pay the ammount remington wants for a 5R...

Send it to wnroscoe (LAPrecision Rifles) and let him coat it with KG GunKote. I think he charges about $250 plus shipping but you better ask him to be sure.

I was speaking from experience having owned a 700VS(same rifle as SPSV with a diff. stock), 700P(same rifle as VS & SPSV with diff. stock and parkerizing), and 5R. 1/12 barrels shoot 175's just fine all the way out to 1K all day long down here close to sea level. All are cut with the same reamers which is a big part in why they all perform close to the same. You are correct about the 5R cleaning up easier but it still didn't really make a difference. To be honest, the best shooting one of all of them was the 700P. The 5R was the only one I didn't rebarrel because of the resale value. I sold it because I have 3 other .308's and even though it is an excellent rifle, it is not on par with a custom build. It was a pain to have to reset my dies to load for one rifle when all of the others were cut with the same reamer. They are all good places to start and with the right ammo and driver, they should deliver 1/2MOA performance all day long.

Re: Best Rem700 for AICS

My most recent setup

SPS tactical in .308
AICS 2.0
Badger 20moa rail
Leupold Mk4 8.5-25
Harris bipod.

Using FGMM 168gr, consistantly gets under .5 moa, smallest I've seen so far is about .3moa. This was prone off the bipod and just my hand under the butt, and I'm still new to precision shooting. (got tired of playing around with carbines)

Plus, you gotta love that 20in barrel with a folding stock.

by the way, hi, I'm new here.

Krylon worked for me while I figured out what I want to do a little more permanent.
