Im building up a custom scout rifle in 30-06. Are there any good scout scopes out there? Like ones with illuminated reticles or bdc turrets? Target turrets?

Thanks for the advice.

Re: Best Scout Scope?

For a true scout scope, only Burris and Leupy. There are other pistol scopes like Nikon encore and Weaver, but the scout scopes should be parallax free at further distances.

As for BDC, it is a scout rifle. Quick acquisition, both eyes open, long eye relief. Moving targets up close to 300Y. Well within your Max point blank range. Dont know of any BDC in a eer scope, either way the hash/dots would be tiny.

I can dig the illum for lowlight situations, but not sure anyone make an illum extended eye relief scope.

I contacted Vortex last year to ask if they will build a scout scope and someone said they will take the suggestion for consideration, but there has been no news of them making a scout scope.

Re: Best Scout Scope?

Scout scopes are the antithesis of all the options you are looking for. They embody the KISS principle at its core and thus, you aren't really going to find them in that niche market.

I have used the Leupold and Burris dedicated scout scopes and I prefer the Burris. To my eyes, the glass in the Burris is superior to that of the Leupold in terms of overall clarity/resoution and in lower light (thanks in part to the heavier plex reticle versus the normal duplex in the Leupy), the eye relief on the Burris is better, it is lighter in weight, shorter in OAL, and about $50-75 cheaper than the Leupold.

Now, in terms of drawbacks, because the Burris is a true 2.75x magnification scope as opposed to the Leupold (which is advertised as a 2.5x but is actually a 2.3x), the Leupold has a larger FOV (about 8-10' or so at 100yds) which is desirable on a scout rifle setup. Also, at one time anyway, I believe that Leupold offered some customization of the scout scopes through their custom shop which might allow you to modify the reticle and/or turrets if you so chose, but I wouldn't do it based on my experiences with various rifles in a scout role/configuration.

Re: Best Scout Scope?

I had the Leupold FXII IER and sold it to try the burris.I was told it was better than the leupold too. After trying the burris,I sold it and bought the Leupold again.Maybe ORD got a bad leupold, cause the glass quality on the burris wasn't as good as the glass quality on the Leupold,in my eye's.I have it mounted in Leupold QR medium rings and it holds zero without issue.Either scope will improve the accuracy of the rifle.I have a lefty ruger scout rifle and I would've built a LH savage scout in 30.06,if ruger didn't come out with the LH model.
Good Luck with your choice.

I've been looking for a low-power variable scout scope for my 45-70 guide gun. How well do these hold up to heavy recoil and do you guys ever run specials on these?
Thanks!

Re: Best Scout Scope?

A friend has had the 2.5 leupold on his full size 1895 marlin 45.70 for a couple of years now, without issue. He shoots some pretty hot 405 grn loads out of it too. It's his truck/deer drive/bear rifle.I have no experience with the illuminated model,so I can't vouch for its durability.I adhere to the KISS principle with my scout rifle too. It's made for fast target aquisition and shooting.Unless you use it with the illumination turned on all the time, thats one more thing to do before target aquisition. Then there's the issue with relying on the batteries etc, etc.I was looking to put an ARMS mount for quicker scope removal, but the leupold QR rings are holding their own,so why F with it.
