I almost replied into an existing active thread but I didn’t want to thread-jack.

I’m looking for a small-frame piston AR for suppressing and novelty. Use case is primarily range and maybe a little comp. Hopefully won’t need to rely on it in a SHTF scenario, but I don’t want it to be fragile.

I have a couple of good DIs so we don’t need to rehash the DI v. Piston debate.

Considering HK MR556A1 but curious about LMT, Barrett and whatever else is out there.

Thanks!

Edited to make clear the competition use case was a minor consideration.

The only suppressed piston gun I've ever seen at a competition is a PWS MK111 Mod2. The guy likes to be different, so he regularly shoots it in matches with 400+ yard shots. It does well. I'm not saying that other guns wouldn't work, just that it's a very uncommon choice for competition.

Yeah, that is an edge case to be sure.

I went LMT. No regrets. Only shot it in one team comp. It worked fine shooting 77gr Prvi match ammo. Plenty accurate at the required distances for a carbine. More important, completely reliable.

I’ve got a PWS Mk111 upper on my SBR lower that I hog hunt with 100% suppressed. It’s a bit heavier but less rude to me while shooting with the can. Only piston unit I’ve ever tried, but I like it and would buy another.

I was heavily biased against pistons till i grabbed a 12 inch Shovelnose on a whim and its a damn good upper. I think that it may of shoot as nice, if not nicer than my 12.5 Spec War. Totally changed he way that I feel about piston guns. Can't comment on the HK or Barret, but they make good stuff. I would the options you mentioned, i would go with what is in stock/availible.

Sig MCX, HK, LMT, Sig 516, PWS. Preference to the Sig MCX if you can find one while the 516 brings up the rear.

I’d stay away from the LWRC based upon the numerous failures I have seen that could not be easily resolved on the range.

I currently run a Sig Virtus and had a PWS Mod 1. I was a lot more impressed with the Sig suppressed and non suppressed, so the PWS got sold. Since the Sig carrier has less mass it runs flatter. My PWS was kinda over gassed, which is unnecessary when both have adverse gas settings. Both were plenty good for hogs. I've shot a couple MR556s and they were nice too, but I prefer the Virtus.
