Rifle Scopes Best spotting scope under $200

Re: Best spotting scope under $200

the konus 20-60x100 looks pretty nice for 299. what would you guys recommend for that wide of range (100-1500 yards)? I'm sure I could live with 300 since I just put down 6k on my rifle/scope...just wasn't sure where to start and really don't want to spend too much for something not going on the rifle. Is there any reason to spend a lot of $$$ on a spotting scope essentially used to check the target? I've never used one in my many years of shooting, but then again, I'm fairly new to target and long range shooting.

Just as you paid a lot of money for your gun and scope, you are gonna have to shell out a decent amount of money for good optics.

I have had a problem trying to find one that looks good in the store and then looks great outside. I have returned several within the last month. The problem is that without spending a good amount of money on your spotting scope, you wont even be able to use the magnification band over 40x, because the image becomes too distorted and dark. Here in AZ I can't go above 15-20 this time of year becuase of mirage.

I have decided to look at the 15x45x60 if not 80 range, otherwise the magnification is useless.

I think that the Konus scopes look really good, and I am gonna buy one in two weeks.

Good LucK

For up to 1500yds the Vortex Razor HD is a good value at $1500. The purpose of spending the extra money on a spotter is that it will give you a sharper image as distance/power increases. You don't have your profile filled out so I don't know what part of the country you live. It's probably safe to assume you'll be dealing with mirage at some point. Mirage can be so bad that even 20x won't help much. OTOH I have days where I have a beautiful image at 60x. When it comes to optics the old adage "buy once, cry once" holds true.

Austin, TX. For what I know now, I'll have to drive several hours to get to a range of that length, but I haven't looked too hard yet as my DTA SRS is still a few weeks out for delivery.

Re: Best spotting scope under $200

The problem with a 2-300 dollar scope is it's ability to reslove bullet holes at a given distance. At the distance you want to use it at I haven't seen a scope in that price range that has the resolution you would need. Follow the advice other posters have given you. You need a spotter that will resolve down to 2-3 arc seconds and that doesn't come cheap. Cheap can come out very expensive.

Re: Best spotting scope under $200

There is a Kowa TSN-1 in the FS forum with a 20-60x zoom eyepiece for $500. This was around $1200 back in the day and is still better than most non-Kowa scopes in the current marketplace at the sub-$2K level. My opinion, having used a similar item for 15 years shooting HP.

Re: Best spotting scope under $200

Look for a surplus Army/Marine M49 scope on eBay or similar. Not quite up to today's standards, but the best your tax $ could buy for over 50 years.

I still carry one as part of my PD SRT deployment kit. It's not as good or modern as a $1-2K Leup or USO. They are 1950's technology. So if you can spend $1-2k, you can do somewhat better.

But for short $, M49's are rugged, accurate and dependable.

Cheers,
