Hopefully you all aren't getting sick of my posts yet

I'm working on finalizing my scope selection. probably between USO and Nightforce now. Leupold could still be in the running but it's running a distant 3rd place right now. This is probably a once in a lifetime purchase for me (well for my department), at least once for this coming decade, so I need to make the "perfect" choice.

With that being said, my next question would be looking for opinions on reticles. I'm not sure if I really care for the mildot all that much. what kind of experiences have those of you using a scope for tactical (military or LE) situations had in regards to the reticle? what have you liked best or found to be most useful in such situations?

Re: best tactical reticle

The reticle is going to depend on YOUR training and skill.

I don't have any problems using the standard USMC Mildot reticle, however I opted for a GAP Reticle on my SN-3. Only time will tell if I can more accurately mil with it.

Experienced shooters can measure to .1 Mil with a standard mildot. I don't know that you can get closer with a TMR, GAP or other.

Re: best tactical reticle

Bolt is right in that you need to train on it no matter what you get but you probably know that. Any reticle can work but I would get a reticle in the same graduations as what your department already has on it's other rifles so that the training and equipment compatibility will still be there.

If you don't want a mil based reticle than Nightforce offers MOA reticles like the NP R1 which will give you MOA graduations. With a matching knob you will only need one set of data instead of having MOA for knobs and Mil data for the reticle but that is true with any matching system. If you wanted a mil based reticle the MLR is a good choice.

Re: best tactical reticle

H27 - personal choice. not as busy as the H25. mil/mil. Just need to find the scope that comes w/the reticle.

ps. i e-mail Horus every few months just to bug them about placing the reticle in one of their Falcons, but I guess there are legalities about the H27....i don't know.

Re: best tactical reticle

Just my opinion, but for distances you will be shooting as an LE shooter why not just get a duplex? Less clutter and simple...simple is good, sometimes.

Re: best tactical reticle

I like the GAP or similar reticle. Whatever you get, do what Rob said: do yourself a favor and get matching turrets (mil/mil or MOA/MOA).

Rob set me straight with this one. First time I had a mil/mil scope and went to the range with him, he had me shoot and then read the adjustment in the scope. Really it is pretty sweet to adjust the shots based on the first shot read (only with follow-ups, but...).
To give a great example:
Didn't have the come-ups the last time I was at the range. Shot one, read the reticle, did come ups, and second one was right on target.
