Re: Big 5 hunting?

once you hunt Cape Buffalo, you'll be hooked.

I did it the first time in 2006 in Mozambique. Been dreaming about it ever since.

Going back in August 2012. Buff packages in Moz and Zimbawe are still pretty reasonable.

that is unless you get your buff early and get too excited about the numerous other game animals always readily available in Africa.

Been there 5 times already. Actually a good value for your hunting dollar. The worst part of the trip is the LONG flight over there. Generally 16 hours from your US point of departure. YUCK.

Re: Big 5 hunting?

I did a plains game hunt 2 years ago in South Africa. We are starting to plan our next trip. This hunt will be for a Cape or a Leopard.

I've hunted with Game Hunters Africa/Zambizi Delta Safaris on 4 trips so far.

Mark and Glen Haldane run the show and are GREAT people. They hunt all over southern Africa. I've hunted plains game and birds in South Africa, plains game and buff in Mozambique and plains game in Botswana with them.

Every trip a BLAST, accomidations, staff and professional hunters all first class.

I can really recommend Mozambique. It still is what we as kids imagined Africa is supposed to be like. Very wild and raw. Guess that's one good outcome of 25 years of civil war there, they are far behind other developed areas around them.

The other were great as well. I'd go back to any of their locations again any time and have recommended them to many friends who have all had similar experiences.

I'm hooked. Save most of my spare $$ for my next Africa trip and a new to me gun once and a while.

Re: Big 5 hunting?

When you say "hunt" you really mean: have a guide and a tracker team walk you right up to the animal so you can take an easy 25-yard shot right? Just sayin...

Re: Big 5 hunting?

Normally I don't feed troll like comments, but.....

And it sounds like you've done it a lot from the tone of your comment.

If that's the hunt you want, it can be done that way.

On the other hand, hunters in Africa spot and stalk game in an environment where you are not on top of the food chain.

Getting close in thick bush is the challange. Generally, no long range shooting in bush Africa. Every animal is super alert because it is all eat and be eaten. I have personally spent days on foot pursuing game of all kinds. No truck jump off and shoot for me.

You have no choice but to go with PH and trackers, that's the law. If it's not for you, so be it.

Don't be so quick to criticize criticize what you don't know or base it on what is shown on some 1/2 hour TV show, that's not how it is for the vast majority of hunters in Africa.

Re: Big 5 hunting?

I have researched it plenty. I worked with a massively obese guy who successfully went "big 5" hunting every year. I also know that hunting these animals helps local economies and helps get rid of poaching. However, I also know that someone with zero experience and a lot of money will go on these "hunts" and come back with several trophies. Perhaps you go on foot, but surely you admit that most don't. In fact, the primary reason there's such a huge caliber requirement is because most "hunters" have almost no experience with a firearm.

It's like when you own a fast car, but everyone with a faster, cheaper motorcycle is wondering what the big deal is. Or dating the prettiest girl... in the trailer park. Modern Big 5 hunting is very much a tourist activity, even if you go out of your way to make it legit fair chase. The danger is much over-hyped too.

Imagine if I had a PH, tracking team, and some local guys to clean, skin, and pack my Rocky Mountain Elk for me. I would not be surprised if some other hunters weren't impressed, and let me hear about it.

Re: Big 5 hunting?

Those with enough cash can do the same on a elk hunt. I've seen their pictures and heard their stories. Not for me. I also hunt the mountains, horses or on foot. That's my choice.

Nothing more pure about mountain hunting than any other kind, unless the hunter choses to make it so.

I will not admit that most do the truck hunts as I know of few who do so. All my hunting companions do it afoot.

Your money, your choice and same for those who can't do it afoot.

Re: Big 5 hunting?

Thanks for the info Chopperguy. It has been my experenence that a hunt is what you make of it and sounds like you do it the right way. You can drive around and shoot elk or deer here in the states without stalking if that is what you want to call hunting.
