Not really surprised there......
My last hunt in Tenn. my kid frailed one with his 30-30 three times and finally killed it after a TOO long wounded-pig-chase when it charged him point blank in a creek bed. Another guy with us on that trip hammered his pig repeatedly at short range with a 35 Rem Amish Maching Gun before it went down, with a head shot in there somewhere. Another took a hard hit from a guy's 9.3 Sumthin Ruger RSI and ran up hill way too far before finally yielding to oxygen deprivation. My hog tho', went to sleep rather peacefully with one hit through a shoulder with an 85 grain TSX, as in tip right over with legs quivering....so it's hard to tell what's gonna happen. I was pretty much feeling the most undergunned with my little .243AI after seeing all the above take place before my pig showed up. We were hunting with dogs that day and the guides were back and forth on the radio saying my pig was trying to kill the dog, biggest/meanest one of the day. When he came over the ridge all slow and trying to lure the dog up close, and I heard my guide whisper "Oh Shit", and my buddies were all chambering rounds from behind nearby trees, I felt no shame at all in unsnapping my .45LC BH......just in case.

Tripwire, that is 1 narly lookin hog. Are you eating any of that and if so is it any good. It would be nice to have some here to hunt but hear and read that they have gottin out of control in a lot of states and cause a lot of damage. I wonder why it has no hair on its backend?

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but no hogs here in my immediate AO, so we have to go somewhere to hunt 'em. We went to middle Tennessee for this hunt. Not too far for us to go, and wouldn't be for you either coming out of SE Ohio. I have an offer to go down to Tx this coming spring, the boy and I might do it, sounds fun....
We ate him, it was a year ago, so it's pretty much gone. Brought him home quartered in coolers and butchered it ourselves. We made a ton of different kinds of sausage, and kept the back straps and a few roasts for the grill and crockpot. The bacon was a lot leaner than tame hog so we just ground it up with the sausage. A little different taste/cooking smell than the hogs we raise here, but then again they eat/live different too. A long slow cook, and some marinade, will fix about anything <grin>.
Yeah, his ass had a nice even rub, didn't it.......

that hog of Tripwires shows alot more Russian/Europian heritage than these here in Texas do. mine looks like a Duroc gone wild. plus it gets colder there than here so their hair gets more wooley looking. guess he had an itch on rump! they will rub pine trees in two getting the sap on them for bug control.

That's pretty cool lmc, how many have you killed with the 7.62x39 and what's your opinion of it's perforance on pigs? I'm not up to speed on AKs but isn't that some type of long barreled variant? Looks wicked.
I've been thinking of trying my AR x39 on them with Hornady .310 123gr VMax' but we have the opportunity for long shots, last one I shot was at 300yds +, so it would limit my effectiveness somewhat. Barnes 130gr .310 might be the way to go.

i've killed at least 100 hogs this year and most with one variant or other of the AK's i have. most shots are within 50 to 75 yrds. i take SilverBear FMJ pull the projectiles since they are all over the place on weight, re-measure the powder charge to 26 gr. which also varies greatly from 25.8 to 27.3 grains, and load Sierra 125 gr. SP which will shoot 1.25" groups consistently at 100m's. especially out of the Maadi RPM I used with this kill. most hogs out here weigh between 50-150 lbs. which are good eating size. there are bigger ones as you can see but they tend to be loners and nocturnal. this one was in a breeding mood, well "was" in the mood.

That is incredible, good for you man. Here in CA we actually have decent pig numbers, in fact wild pig harvest is greater than the deer kill, but what little public land that holds pigs is poor hunting and most private ranches are $$$ if you don't have an in with the owner. To top that off some time back the dfg started requiring you to obtain a 'free' pig harvest tag. Now those 'free tags' are over $20 each. Thieving Bastages.

Very ingenious. That's some good accuracy for an AK. I've heard AR 7.62x39 extractors and bolts don't care for steel cased ammo so I've only run brass cased reloads in mine so far. Haven't killed a thing with it but it's predator and pig time so I'll get it bloody soon.
Check out this tusker that came into the orchard. Val, the ranch hired hand thumped him with a 20 gauge slug.

Yeah, that should be a lesson learned because it's just downright disgraceful hunting like that.
1. Use the right tools for the job. (proper caliber, firearm, etc.)
2. Have the skill and knowledge to put the bullet where it needs to go the first time. (everyone except you knows to put the bullet in the ear or just behind the front leg and low in a hog. Shooting them center mast all day gets you chasing a wounded hog.)
3. If you can't do either #1 or #2 then don't hunt.

nah I'm all about killin some hogs. But 5 shots to put it down is a bit cruel. I didn't even take 5 shots to put down the stinky hadj.

it weighed 263 lbs. not very old either judging from the teeth and growth on it's cutters. hogs are vermin. TPW estimated the population in 2006 at around 2 million, yes million. i had to check that figure myself. they recently lifted the need for a hunting license to hunt them. kill'em all. i hunt with a variety of weapons, but prefer the AK for up close and personal, hog or man! my first shot entered the chest just behind the shoulder. 2nd shot hit almost identical except he was quartering away on the run and exited left front shoulder. 3rd was behind the right ear as he was dragging himself thru the wooded area near the field. tough SOB!

Been killing hogs for over a decade now.
Used everything from double ought buck to a 45/70. Dozens have been downed with my AK. In the summer's heat a bunch will hunker down at a mudhole and snooze. Stalking in with an AK is very effective.
Yes shot placement goes to hell and ya have a trot to gun down some of the wounded, but feral hogs are vermin. They have decimated the wild turkey population by eating the eggs. If I dont catch up to them all and some die a few days later oh well. They are vermin, not 'noble' woodland creatures.
I've blown the lungs out of a mid sized hog and had him run 100 yards deep into the woods using a 308, dropped em dead with a gut shot with my AK, beat their brains out with multiple 12 gauge head hits and they still lived, and hit them right behind the ear and had them run, in a circle, until I got there.
But it is nice to see the experts opine on what it takes to humanely kill a hog. I see them as rats and I dont lose sleep if it takes a rat some time to die from poison, doubt many vets shed a tear if they find blood trails but no body in combat.
Also good to know that in a furball some can still one shot one kill.
I personally cry for days if I dont one shot one kill cockroaches and mosquitoes!

That is incredible, good for you man. Here in CA we actually have decent pig numbers, in fact wild pig harvest is greater than the deer kill, but what little public land that holds pigs is poor hunting and most private ranches are $$$ if you don't have an in with the owner. To top that off some time back the dfg started requiring you to obtain a 'free' pig harvest tag. Now those 'free tags' are over $20 each. Thieving Bastages.

Very ingenious. That's some good accuracy for an AK. I've heard AR 7.62x39 extractors and bolts don't care for steel cased ammo so I've only run brass cased reloads in mine so far. Haven't killed a thing with it but it's predator and pig time so I'll get it bloody soon.

I've killed alot of hogs, mostly sows but never saw tusks like those! Boars are certainly alot more meaner too! Way mean along the Sabine River!

Yes shot placement goes to hell and ya have a trot to gun down some of the wounded, but feral hogs are vermin. They have decimated the wild turkey population by eating the eggs. If I dont catch up to them all and some die a few days later oh well. They are vermin, not 'noble' woodland creatures.
I've blown the lungs out of a mid sized hog and had him run 100 yards deep into the woods using a 308, dropped em dead with a gut shot with my AK, beat their brains out with multiple 12 gauge head hits and they still lived, and hit them right behind the ear and had them run, in a circle, until I got there.
But it is nice to see the experts opine on what it takes to humanely kill a hog. I see them as rats and I dont lose sleep if it takes a rat some time to die from poison, doubt many vets shed a tear if they find blood trails but no body in combat.
Also good to know that in a furball some can still one shot one kill.
I personally cry for days if I dont one shot one kill cockroaches and mosquitoes!

Nice hog. The ones I have shot were just little guys. Still do not eat them but the family likes them.

Are either of you guys around Mineola/Tyler interested in selling hog/yote/varmint hunts at all? My buddy owns HobbyTownUSA there in Tyler and I'm in Shreveport for the next Lord knows how many months and we both would pay to hunt hogs, yotes, and whatever other vermin needs killing.
