I have been following the thread on which binoculars to buy and have a question. Everyone seems to recommend 10x power bino's. I used to have a pair- cheapo Simmons, but they were 10x and I had a hard time seeing through them- I couldn't hold them steady. I can hold 8x steady enough.

Does everyone who uses 10x binos rest them?

Re: Binocular power?

My current binos are 8x, but I have used 10x.

When you scan with binos the trick is to pull in your elbows and rest the backs of your arms (triceps) against your torso. Hold the binos at the back and cover the sides of your eyes with your thumbs.

More than 10x are going to need a rest.

Re: Binocular power?

I keep a pair of 10x50 binoculars in the car "just in case". Like shooting a rifle, bracing yourself as already explained by lonewolf is necessary. With practice, you'll become more steady.

One tip: buy as good as you can afford. The better corrected the glass, the less strain on your eyes. Poorly corrected glass will likely give you a headache.

Re: Binocular power?

My local Cabela's has Vortex Viper 10x50 binos for $599.99. I can buy Vortex Razor 10x50 binos for $715.99 with my discount.
I am going to read as much as I can about other brands, but these look pretty good.

Out west where I hunt we glass all the time. We always use a tripod. Most people I hunt with use 12-15 power.

+1 One tip: buy as good as you can afford. The better corrected the glass, the less strain on your eyes. Poorly corrected glass will likely give you a headache.

Re: Binocular power?

i have 10x leica ultravids and the clarity is almost unbelievable it is so good. i do think the 8x is alittle easier to hold steady though. however with the crazy clarity i have used my binos to spot shooters at 1000yds a few times with reasonable success, but it was a sand backstop so that really helped.
