i need some quality binoculars for hunting. i was looking nikons action series in the 10x40 and they seemed pretty good. ive heard nikons are hard to beat for the price. i dont have a preference between 40 or 50mm objective but id like to stick with 10x or higher. i don want to spend over $150, preferrably under. any ideas? thanks

Re: binocular suggestions

I have a set of 10x42 Vortex Diamondbacks that I got from Dough at Cameralandny.com

They are a little more expensive than your price range, but they are great. I use them in low-light quite a bit (I work at night). They also have a lifetime warranty even covering damage. They spend most of their time in the front seat of my patrol car cooking and freezing. When they are not there, they are in my ruck getting banged on and wet. For the last two years I have not had any problems.

Re: binocular suggestions

Had a pair of Nikon Action (7x35), they fogged internally after one squall. Look for the action extreme (waterproof). Or better, there can be good roof prisms near that price range that'll do you well.

Re: binocular suggestions

You may wish to take a look at the Vortex Vulture 10x50 in Coyote Tan @ $159.99
Phase corrected prisms deliver sharp, greatly contrasted images.
Fully multi-coated optics increase light transmission, producing high, reliable image quality.
BaK-4 prisms also increase brightness and edge-to-edge sharpness.
Wide viewing field makes it easier to follow wildlife on the move.
Long eye relief opens up the field of view for rewarding views, especially when wearing eyeglasses.
Retractable twist-and-lock eyecups adjust with a smooth, easy motion for comfortable eye relief.
Tapered eyecups fit your eyes more naturally for years of comfortable, relaxed viewing.
Fully waterproof binoculars overcome the challenges of water and dust with tightly sealed O-rings.
Fogproof dry nitrogen purged optics prevent internal fogging of lenses with sudden temperature changes.
Rubber armor add shockproof protection while giving you a comfortable surface to grip.
Exterior ridges on the Vulture binoculars preserve a secure grip in cold, wet weather.

Re: binocular suggestions

You probably won't like my answer but here it is anyway.

I think you need to double your budget to get into decent glass. I love nikon for the price. I have a set of 10x40 ATB that have served me well. I don't think you could ask for a better value than the ATB series. A buddy just got a set of the Vortex Viper 10x42s and I was very impressed with them. I think the vipers maybe comparable to swarovski. Leica's are the best binos I've ever looked through. Zeis and Burris have never worked well with my eyes for some reason.

Glass is one place where you definately get what you pay for and I think it's wise to save for the best glass you can possibly afford. That said, everbody's eyes are different and what works for one may not work for you.

Also, try to be honest about what your light gathering capabilities and magnification needs are when choosing the power to objective configuration and by all means don't make your final decision by looking through the glass inside a store. Get them outside and check things out under natural light and at varying distances.

Re: binocular suggestions

i got a guy trying to sell me vortex diamondbacks in 10x42 but i just dont think i have that much money for binocs. anybody know the difference between the dbacks and crossfires? the cf is $100 cheaper in 10x42 and its still vortex...

Re: binocular suggestions

The Diamondbacks have a stronger chassis and are more rugged. The Diamondback also features a wider field of view. Optically they are very close, however, the Diamondback will give a brighter and edge sharpness superiority due to the Diamondback being Phase Corrected.

Re: binocular suggestions

I also have a pair of vortex fury and love them. I bought them during a liquidation sale at Sportsman's Warehouse and am very very happy with my purchase. I was able to pick them up for less than $200 OTD and they absolutely impress me every single time I use them. After looking through mine a buddy tried to snag his own pair but got stuck with a high-end bushnell model. Believe me, the vortex fury smokes them! The optics are amazing, they are very well built, and thier warranty is top notch!

Re: binocular suggestions

I took Doug's opinion and just ordered the Vulture model above. I should get it in a few days. If it is as half as good as the reviews say, I should be very pleased. I've been looking for a pair of crisp clear binos for hunting. The clarify and how it picks up lowlight are what I am looking for with a reasonable price.

The Diamondback's I got from Doug had the "imperfections" in the coating. I really am not sure what the imperfections are. I "think" I see a spot where there is a little black rubber in the coyote, but I could care less.

Then again, I beat the crap out of my gear.

Re: binocular suggestions

what power and objective size are yall using for hunting?

i do a lot of scouting in early morning/late afternoon in low light. i need something that is powerful enough to look at deer several hundred yards away if need be but not so powerful that its shaky when viewing deer at like a hundred yards or less.

is there something perfect for most situations?

as mentioned above I use the 10x42. While I am usually "hunting" a different kind of critter, almost all of my hunting is in the dark, sometimes aided by streetlights. 10x is enough for decent detail without the shakes. 100 yards is about the max range that I frequently use my binos, but I am looking for criminal activity, not racks. If I am setting up further away, then I bust out the spotting scope and tripod.

Re: binocular suggestions

i was recommended to get the 10x42 model for what ill be using it for, guy said it would be the most versatile power and objecive. i just dont know if i can afford to cough up $200 for binos. and theres other more expensive stuff that i want already for christmas lol
