Bipod vs. Tripod mounting.

Why is the standard to mount a Bipod as far forward on the rifle as possible for the most stability not applied to the use of a Tripod, which seems to be just froward of the magazine well?

I lack the time behind a tripod, but every time I set myself to using it, I have constant left/right swing equivalent to 6+mils. This is either sitting or kneeling with a pack for the rear support.

When I move back on the tripod to where my bipod is mounted, I am significantly more stable, then I am down to recoil management.

If you were to eliminate the possibility of grounding the rear of the rifle on any surface, I suspect you would want to move your bipod more toward the balance point of the rifle. We put the bipod out on the end of the rifle because we are supporting the rear with a bag or some other support. A rifle on a tripod is best at the balance point because it removes the need to muscle the rear end to keep the thing on target.

Without any support on the rear, then how are you dealing with cheek weld? That is pushing down on the stock, and preloading a tripod for positive shoulder pressure to help lock it gets interesting with one or more legs coming off the ground, at least for me especially if I am panning to different targets.

Should I approach this as more of a "Free Recoil" method?

i think you need to re-evaluate how you're shooting off a tripod. 'support on the rear' comes from the gun being balanced in the middle. how do you shoot a barricade without support in the rear? why are the legs coming off the ground?

just curious...what tripod and head are you using?

b6graham hit exactly what I was thinking. How do you shoot a barricade with no rear support- like a port window or a tank trap? The tripod is essentially the same thing. Isn't a tank trap a really big tripod?

Regardless of anything else, mounting the tripod forward of the balance point is going to do nothing but make the gun more difficult to control.

I'd rather throw a game changer on top of a tripod and shoot off of that, than use a crappy hog saddle type clamp. Especially if the ball head underneath it is equally poor.

I am shooting of a pig saddle, mounted on a leveling head, and a pig0311 tripod.

The only barricades that I have shot off have been with my gas guns (long ago in the before time), and then I was support arm braced against it and pulling the grip into my shoulder.

Not all of us can afford a $1000+ tripod setup.
