In the last few months there have been some questions regarding Birdsong finishes and specifically Tan-T and how it compares to other Tan/FDE/Coyote shades.
I had a 16 inch AR upper that I was looking to have finished but was initially reluctant to use the Tan-T finish as the photos I saw on the net were lighter than what I wanted. I spoke with Wally (Walter Jr) on the phone and he told me it was darker than shown in photos and also, if I wasn't happy with the color to send it back in for a rework. Wally also recommended finishing the Forward Assist and Ejection Port Cover as it made a nice contrast.
Well, last night when I arrived home I found a rather large box at the front door. Keep in mind this was just a complete upper, sent in as individual components for coating, so the large box was a bit of a surprise.
When I managed to get the upper unpacked, Birdsong's folks had packed it in a shipping container and then over packed that, I was very pleased with the finish and how it compared to other shades.
I sent the parts in late August and had an assembled upper back in early November, which is not too shabby.
The pics:
Assembled upper:
Comparison of Tan-T, KAC Taupe, TD FDE, Magpul FDE:
Knight's Inconel Triple Tap Brake finished with Black-T:
I still need to shim and Rocksett the brake and then its off to the range.
Based on my dealings and initial review of the product I would recommend Birdsong Finishes, as many others already do. One just has to be patient and I consider my wait to have been minimal.
