I am in the process of getting one of the new Rem 700 .223 5-R guns. I see that Robar has a finish for stainless steel where they blacken it. Does anyone have any experience with this finish as far as durability goes? Thanks.

Re: Blackening Stainless Steel

Please keep in mind that occasionally everyone drops the ball.

I had a 1911 coated with ROBAR and it began to flake off at the first shooting session.

There are better adhering coatings such as IonBond's W DLC which is what I use as a coating for stainless (a la Sig P226, P229 and P239) and carbon steel firearms.

Look at Remington's XCR rifles for examples of rifles with W DLC.

Re: Blackening Stainless Steel

You can get it black oxided like the marine m40's.As far as appearence it looks the best IMO just tough finding people that do it.

Guys, Robar does do black oxiding of stainless steel. I had a Seecamp done. (I assume the OP isn't talking about a Roguard finish).

I can't say I'm completely thrilled with it, as there were some light spots in the finish when it came back (plus it was dirty as all heck) ... but it's more durable than I'd anticipated based on that first impression.

Re: Blackening Stainless Steel

I love Robars NP3 for internals and sidearms but did not like the Roguard on the exterior. It was not real durable, more than duracoat but not near the hardness of cerakote.
