I am interested in getting a Blackout. Here are my questions:

I want to shoot subsonic and supersonic 7.62X39 performance type rounds. What barrel twist do I want?

What is the optimum barrel length? i would like to keep it as short as possible but not give up performance on the supersonic rounds.

Will I need a gas regulator?

How good is remington brass? I have always used Winchester and Lapua. I heard Remington is pretty poor brass. Would I be better off using Hornady .300 whisper brass instead?

Re: Blackout Questions

At the very low pressures that cartridge operates at, Remington brass will be more than sufficient. If I were having a barrel made from a blank, I would have a 9" 1-7 twist barrel made. That way I could accurately shoot everything up to and including 240 SMK's. 9" will suffice for supersonic rounds because their velocity is not that great in the first place.

For shooting both subsonic and supersonic ammo go with an 8 twist. It will work fine for just about any bullet weight you can think of.

Go with a 16 or an 18 inch barrel to be sure you burn all that powder and get the most velocity.

Adjustable gas blocks are not mandatory, but nice to have.

I have not seen any Remington or Hornady brass yet. Most people are using cut down 223/5.56 brass. Go with Redding dies.

Re: Blackout Questions

Remington component brass is made to 5.56mm NATO hardness - so it is stronger than what has been sold as Whisper(R) brass. So it should actually take higher pressure than other brass. And it is neck annealed so it won't split like most reformed brass. I don't know how the Hornady brass is.

Re: Blackout Questions

I'm presently working on load development for my 300BLK. I am using new LC brass that I cut down, and formed using Forster dies. So far I've only used LIL GUN powder, but plan to try others. I was wondering, You say that you want to use 7.62X39 bullets, I thought that they measured .311" vs .308" for the 7.62x51 bullets, and therefore would not be a good choice for a .30 cal barrel?

For the OP:
- 9" or 10" is a good length as long as you don't mind the SBR thing.
Sure, you get more velocity with a 16" barrel, but the gains are not anywhere close to those of 5.56 or 7.62 NATO.
Think of the 300 BLK as a pistol cartridge and that will help you wrap your head around it better.

- 1 in 8 twist is the norm.

- The 300 BLK brass made by Rem is purpose built and is the best choice.
That being said, cut down 5.56 works just fine for most applications.

- A gas regulator is not needed as long as you go with one of the companies that have designed their barrels to run the factory 300 BLK rounds.
AAC is the only company that I would guarantee trouble free function.
Noveske and Delta Company are also good choices though.

RSILVERS owns that site and since he is the AAC Engineer for the 300 BLK program, it is a good resource for info on that platform.

Re: Blackout Questions

I'm using the AAC 16" barrel with the pistol length gas system. It cycles the 220 subsonics with and without the can. Accuracy is outstanding - like 1 MOA. I'm not using any supersonic ammo.

If you're loading 220gr subsonic, try AA 1680. For the lighter supersonic rounds, try H110.

.300 Whisper/30-221 rem . has Not gone anywhere .
Just that the BLK draws attention from retail Factory Ammo offerings & good options for people who do not reload or have the drive to do there own Brass forming . Also for those who want to use it on the Job but are restricted use to factory production Firearm & factory Ammo . BLK give it a go .

& BLK Chambering does offer a little bit more punch in High Vel. for the Handloader over Whisper loads with BLK's usig some free-bore .
I did not really believe it & thought it was just sales hype till this week . Handloaded & shot Side-x-Side 1 of each Uppers .
One in .300 whisper/30-221 . & 1 Upper in BLK Chambering .
& both Short-Barrels are quality built Uppers & within a 1/2" of exact length on the SB OAL too . & using exact same Suppressor also .

On the .300 Whispr. the Handloads were taken to the Vel. Edge & abusing the Brass with Aggressive Extraction marks & with a couple pierced Primmers when the weather was Hot .
Shooting Same HandLoads in the BLK Chambering . The Brass was Looking real NICE on the Case Heads & treating the Brass proper with None of the same over-pressured abuse as seen in the .300 with the Handloads .
