Got the call from my old lady's grandpa today....he says they have a large bobcat on the farm that needs exterminating. He has killed 9 chickens and 3 ducks from their pond in the last week or so. They have trail cam pics of him coming in around 2 am. I have a 55 lbs female pitbull and he looks bigger than her. Need ideas for a gameplan....I was thinking hang some chickens in the trees by the pond maybe? 223 AR w/ 53gr hornady vmax? Remington 700 30.06 w/ barnes xlc 165gr handloads? Both rifles have 4-16 power scopes with elusive wildlife technologies green 250 yard rifle light.

Re: Bobcat hunting tips?

Killed 2 good sized bobcats with a .223 bolt gun last hunting trip for hog. 30-06 is definaly more then you need but if its just to exterminate them then dont sweat it. I would take one of those mangled chickens or ducks and place it somewhere you can watch from about 60-75 yards and then wait... Anyway good luck.

Re: Bobcat hunting tips?

223 AR for sure.

Just hang a feather from sewing thread so it moves with the wind.

You can call, dying whatever, but you'll really want an electronic call. I've heard bobcats take forever to come in, like maybe an hour, not the haul ass in like a coyote. They key on movement, your calling could give you away, be well concealed before starting to call.

When you give up, stand up real slow and be ready while looking around, they could be coming in real slow.

All this is simply stuff I've read, I've never actually shot one of them cats, but haven't hunted them either. Maybe I should give it a go one of these days.

Re: Bobcat hunting tips?

223 is plenty. I would either do a stake out at night if he is coming in regularly. Or you can try calling him in either day or night.

Listen to episode 18 here on the predator talk cast. It is Byron South talking about Bobcat Strategies

Re: Bobcat hunting tips?

If the lady doesn't care, kill couple chickens and hang 'em up near the pond, then just sit with your green light... guaranteed kill. Go with the .223 tho, those V-Max are deadly.

Re: Bobcat hunting tips?

Bobcats are notorious for being patient. Coyotes will typically come right in without hanging up. Bobcats on the other hand will walk and sit, then walk and sit. Concealment and movement is critical with bobcats, they are very sly. I'm not sure what your state regs, better check on them. In oklahoma unless you have a furr berrers license after u kill it you better leave it where it lays. I've killed bobcats with .308 at 200yrds with 150grn hornady and it left a clean pelt. If you have any other questions just shoot me a pm.

Re: Bobcat hunting tips?

Bobcats are sketchy fers. You may want to keep the chicken alive and put a zip tie around it's leg connected to a string then to a tree.

Assume it wont be that easy and be quite and still.

Re: Bobcat hunting tips?

Lots and lots of patients!! Bobcats will sneak in on you and then sit there and watch you forever. Be very patient and move very slow. I've sat and called for over an hour, then look out there 100 yrds and there he is just watching me. Their sneaky little bastards. Good luck!!

He doesn't need patients, they are whiny and talk too much.

Re: Bobcat hunting tips?

If the chickens are in a coop, it's easy.

Buy a large live trap cage, place the entrance to the trap against the coop trap door the chickens ( and bobcat ) use, after getting the chickens in at night. He'll come bolting in there to grab another chicken, just like he has been, trip the trap, and bang, one caught kitty.

Dispatch him in the cage, take to taxidermist. Got two just like that at my brothers place!! BTW, they are PISSED in that cage....
