dont want to ask a stupid question, but here we go!:do all bolt action rifles need to 'bedded'?(the reason i ask,i had new bottom metal installed, and when i took rifle apart,it was just the receiver sitting in the mcmillan stock)-am i crazy?is it supposed to have something other than just stock/action?)

Re: bolt action bedding

ill try to help, but i totally dont get this question. do all rifles need bedding? no. should they all be bedded? going to get a few opinions on that one. will all rifles benefit from a quality bedding job? id say yes. is it worth it to bed every rifle? im thinking no.

now as for whats what with your rifle i still cant see what your asking but i see you are concerned with what should be there or not be there? you say when you took it apart there was just an action in a stock. what did you think was gonna be there i guess i should ask to get further on this.

this is what mine would look like

bottom metal outside and up from the bottom of the stock and action comes out of the stock from the top. some come with pillars, some get bedded to fill all that airspace with epoxy and support/cradle the action in a nice solid bed. some come with pillars, they are spacers to set the dbm at the right distance from the action for feeding. the pillars become embedded in the epoxy if you do a full pillar bedding job

look in the gunsmithing section at the top for the bedding thread thats pinned. plenty of pictures and it may clear stuff up

Re: bolt action bedding

Nope stock, action and bottom metal.
The stock is sandwiched between the two.
Bedding it will ensure there is even pressure on the action when the bolts are tightened.
