Is there any major benefit to the grooves / twist on the bolt?

Some are slight groove (some of the surgeon actions) and I have seen others that are a severe twisted bolt. How does this really change the action of the rifle? Does it just make a smoother action?

Besides the obvious increased work that goes into making one, which I know equals more $$...what's the purpose?

Re: Bolt Grooves/Twist

Helps to keep dirt out of the action if I'm not mistaken. Other than that is just looks awesome.

I don't own one so could be wrong about the above.

Re: Bolt Grooves/Twist

i had it done, just because i wanted something different and Karl does amazing work. there are all sorts of opinions on what it does and doesnt do even with the big name companies that offer it. If you like it, get it done, if not thats your choice.

Re: Bolt Grooves/Twist

It depends on HOW it's done.

Most of the fluting you see is for cosmetic purposes. Some use it to lighten the action if they are skating on the edge of a weight class.

When it's done for reliability you will not see the fluting with the action closed. If you look at an AI bolt you will see it's fluted, but only on the areas that are INSIDE the action when the bolt is closed. This prevents them from holding dirt and pulling it into the action, but still gives a location for dirt to go instead of binding up the bolt. It's also not fluted on the portion that rides across the cartridges in the magazine.

It's also done to keep the bolt from freezing shut in extreme conditions....

i hunted in minus 30*F....i had no problems with the action being a popcicle...or any failure to fire.......so i'm throwing the bullshit flag on the above ketboard commando comments...
