Hey all,

I was looking at a Remington 700 5R 20'' at a local gun store, and I noticed that when the trigger breaks there is significant movement of the bolt - it jumps/jerks a direction parallel to the barrel. I would say more than five millimeters of movement.

The gun store guy said it was normal, but the two other 700s I looked at didn't do this, and I checked the one I have at home and it also doesn't do this.

I was thinking about buying this gun, but now I am hesitant. Is this movement normal or problematic?

Re: bolt handle jumps upon trigger break???

As for bolt handle jump/movement, I'm 99.9% sure that the handle is out of time for #1. #2 the cocking piece is probably hitting the adjacent side of the cut out in the bottom of the bolt body, adjacent to the cocking ramp. A shinny spot at the entry point will be the tale tale sign.

Is this normal? Sometimes, especially with factory rifles.

Will it hurt anything? Most will never see the difference but, it is an accuracy killer for LR rifles and custom builds.

Would I pass on that rifle? Yes unless is was stupid cheap. I'd make the repair at that point and rock on.

Re: bolt handle jumps upon trigger break???

Its a non issue,it does it because there is no shell in the chamber,so that means there is no slight back pressure on the bolt to hold it completely down after the firingpin has dropped.some rifles do it and some dont, factory assembly line rifles these days are not that precsion made,so they do have a lot of give in there recievers.Put an empty brass case in it and try,ill bet this solves the problem.Hope this helps.

Re: bolt handle jumps upon trigger break???

Ive seen MANY custom actions do this. Its from the cocking piece cut-out in the bolt not being 100% snug with the cocking piece. On an empty chamber it will tilt a tad bit... Put in a live round, it will provide resistance to bolt body rotation, and it will go away.

My M2008 does it, my old Stiller, M700 and Surgeon did it. All shot fine, so I couldnt care less.
