Bolt Head Broke?

I have a new bolt action Savage rifle that I bought New last month for a hunting trip. Been having an issue with the bolt "Sticking" after firing. The bolt does not want to pull up(rotate) and does not want to pull back to eject the spent cartridge. I've also had 3 misfires, where the firing pin "Snapped" but the round did not fire(no marks on the primer). Fun Fun!!!

I've pulled the bolt and cleaned it 3x, and cleaned the bolt chamber & oiled it as well.

I finally pulled the bolt to dis-assembled it to clean it up real well. That's when I found the bolt Head with a slight crack in it(see my pic). The two pieces pulled apart with a little oil, but once cleaned up they do not fit together easily.

It looks like a crack, but I'm assuming that this Bolt Head is defective. What do you guys think?

....exactly, utilize the warranty that came with the rifle, especially as it is a potential safety issue to continue using and firing that rifle.

Or send it to Desh Industries in PA and get it fixed right and back to you fairly quickly. He can fix or replace the bolt head, bush the firing pin hole, turn the firing pin down to fit and install a lift kit.

My father has sent his savage in to them for repair like 3 times. Told them the problem, and zero questions were asked. Sorry to hear about this, hopefully you'll get it back on time for your trip.

That really sucks...but depending in how much it costs to ship it back and the hassle involved you can buy a bolt head for ~$35 and replace it yourself. But you should also check headspace after that, blah...blah.

No axe to grind or complaints so far. Was looking for an opinion as to if it was suppose to be that way. My feelings are that its broke somehow, but figured I would ask on a blog. I've never seen a cracked bolt head or bolt before..
guess I've been lucky. Theres a first time for everything!

Btw. I called Savage and sent them some pics. Will wait to see how that goes.

That's why I would send the entire gun in. Which they will probably suggest. Plus to headspace a new bolt you would need headspace guages, which would probably be more money than shipping in the rifle, and if something happens on your end and you mess up, that would probably void the warranty. Let us know how it goes!

The Savage CS lady was helpful, I got a quick response back. I sent a few pics and they said to send it back to them on their nickel.
First time I've had to send a new gun back to the manuf, but if they make good on the fix I'm happy.

If they fix or replace the bolt head, Do u all think its reasonable to specifically ask that they check the Headspace before shipping it back ? Or is that the Norm for a bolt repair or replacement ? Do I even need to ask that its checked ?

Can't hurt the ask, but if they replace the bolt they will 100 percent, absolutely do so.
