Okay,

The bolt knob with a 1/2" socket in it.

Where do I start.

I designed the bolt handle with the socket in it as an emergency wrench to help guys in the field with keeping the scope attached to the rifle.

Am I missing the boat by not adding a set of bits and attachments to the rifle? Maybe I will market a stock with little recesses cut into it and market it under the name Craftsman. It will be bright red and will rattle like a miraka. Does anyone know what is going to happen to ratchets and wrenches and cork screws and beer bottle openers when the rifle has been sitting in the mud for while. I have a swiss army knife that sat out in the yard for a week! I can barely get the cork screw out to pluck my eye balls out of my head!

I need to go build some rifles.

We talked about the 1/2" socket in the bolt handle idea a few years back, but nobody went anywhere with it.

Probably need to make sure the bolt handle is reinforced to the bolt body, and the knob is tool quality steel.

Make the back of the firing pin an allen head too so you can loosen/tighten the action screws with it

Can you have McMillan mold a hydration bladder into the stock too?

Personally I think it's a neat idea for emergency use. It shows that your thinking "outside the box". No need to get more fancy, simple is better.

Slightly OT, but on the same track, back in the early 90's I bought a shotgun made by Valmet of Finland. It had removable choke tubes. The supplied wrench of course removed the said tubes with one end, the other end was a beer/pop bottle opener. Clever idea that those Finns had, not PC of course, but clever none the less.

You are correct, I saw something about this in a thread a while back and stored it in a little recess in the back of my mind. I really couldn't remember who brought it up, but do not claim it as my original idea. Main reason why "I" did not patent it.

My point is, good ideas can be taken a little too far.

Lite Tac, If you look at the design of the Terry Cross bolt knob, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to go from that to a socket. It already has the basic shape.

I would NOT use a bolt "knob" as a socket.

I think the bolt handle designed as a socket may have some merit, but it has to be reinforced to the bolt body.

How many knobs have we seen broken under normal use?

one piece bolt body/bolt handle, sure. a two piece remington style, forget about it.

If you open the holes in a Terry Cross bolt knob, it will work fine.

It wouldn't be hard to make a reliable, strong, bolt knob tool on a Rem700.

Using it every time you need a 1/2" wrench isn't the point. If someone feels they want it in case of an emergency, why not have it?

I sell open ended Phoenix knobs with a 1/2" round hole in the end of the knob. Why not have that hole in a 1/2" hex shape so IF you need to, you can use it in the field on your scope

you've obviously never ripped a soldered bolt handle off using the way it was intended. making the knob is gravy, keeping a two piece handle attached to the bolt body when applying torque is going to be the hard part.

No, I've never ripped a handle off except once on purpose.

You could tig or reinforce the handle.

I'm not saying it's the best idea. But it can be done without much trouble.

It would be nice if it was a 1/4" socket for the Seekins ring guys, then you could keep these in your pocket or stock pack. Carry the right bits for torquing the ring caps, side clamps, base screws and anything else on the gun.

Kids, if you need to dick with you rifles on the field, get one of RedTac's LT tool holders, put it in your stock pack or Ruck and go.

Actually, if I were going to do anything 'toolish/foolish' to a bolt handle, it would be as suggested above; to include a 1/4" hex opening, so 1/4" hex tools could use it as a driver. Tool handles take up space, but bits can be a lot more compact.

I wonder if there's a torque wrench out there that's driven using a 1/4" hex handle. A bolt knob with the proper 1/4" hex opening could double for such a handle.

I'd rather see interchangeable bolt knobs than a tool in the handle. I have a small tool case, I have no interest in the bolt handle socket

It could be a great idea. Check out the video lowlight put up on the SH special build. It is lightening the bolt a slight bit and puts a possible second use. Hopfully never need it.

I saw the video, it's gimmicky. I'd rather see replaceable aluminum knobs of various shapes and sizes.

I don't think that it's a good idea because you put radial torque on the bolt handle.

Get yourself a Leatherman or Gerber multitool or the such.

Either no one noticed, or no one is mentioning that the bolt "socket" in the video was done with a pre-set torque adjustment, meaning you can only apply so much torque to the bolt knob and that's it. You're not going to over-torque and break the bolt handle that way and you're going to insure that if need be, your scope gets tightened consistently every time maintaining poi. I thought it was pretty ingenious.

Really? All I saw was a bolt knob with a socket on the end machined on the end. Nothing in that video suggested the knob had a build in torque anything.

are we talking about the same video? The one LL did?

That snap sounded like either a torque wrench, or the wrench was a little big and jumped the bolt.

It's actually a fairly simple thing.

Hold a socket in one hand. In the other you need an aimpoint M4 factory qrp mount. For some people it might take an hour. For most it won't.

The QRP esque torque mechanism will keep the knob from popping off. Assuming the knob was attached the right way in the first place.

You do not need a whole hex head for an emergency use. Just mill a 1/2" slot so it catches 2 sides of the nut.

Either it's got a torque setting or the nuts on the scope rings are torque limited, similar to the Aimpoint QRP mount, but either way, something "clicks" very audibly during the video when he tightens the mounts, and stops right there. ON the second one, you can even see the "bolt" move past the click as pressure releases.
There are all sorts of small torque limiting drivers like T handles that are preset and could be easily modified for that use. Consistent torque on those mounting nuts would certainly help repeatability of the scope.
