I noticed upon inspection of my Remington 700 SA that the bolt lugs show some signs of galling on one of the lugs. Its at the front of the lug Just seems to be worn down round a bit. I had the gun re chambered about 200 rounds ago. I am wondering what is a cause and remedy for this? Also the one lug with the galling has more contact then the other side due to it has more bluing worn off it. thanks for the help.

Re: bolt metal galling on 700

Did you have the action trued?

The front of the lug shouldn’t contact any part of the barrel. So if it's galling in the front then it's touching the barrel which can be a bad thing.

Now if you mean the back side of the lugs put a little grease on the back side of the lugs and move on. Galling in most cases is caused by inadequate lubrication of the lugs.

You can't tell much of anything about lug contact from the bluing rubbing or not rubbing off so don't read too much into that.

To correct the problem would be to contact the person who re-barreled it.
