Hunting & Fishing boots and clothing for desert hunt

Re: boots and clothing for desert hunt

Congrats on the tag! It can be hot on that hunt as im sure youre aware. Any good, broke in non-insulated boot will be good. Id make sure you have a good wicking liners and some light wool socks with backups to change out so the other pair can dry. As far as clothes, im fond of the synthetics. Cabelas micro-tex pants are durable fairl inexpensive and dry fast. The microtex light shirts are just right for warm weather hunts especially with a underarmor base layer. Of course jeans and a cotton camo t-shirt would also work!

Jay

i would probably get some sitka ascent pants and a few core zip shirts in open country

i have the same set up in forest camo, wore it last weekend turkey hunting and early bow season here in florida and it works

i also like kuiu camo but doubt you will be able to get enough by your hunt

Take a long hard look @ the UA Speedfreaks... I used the hell outta mine all winter long here, every day all day, put em to the test, and they passed... Hell I even wear em to lift every once in awhile...they feel like a comfortable x-trainer on juice.

Re: boots and clothing for desert hunt

I'm very familiar w/ the desert country of west Texas and southern New Mexico. I prefer an all leather boot w/ no lining/insulation/gore tex down there. Cactus thorns will zip right through mesh/canvas material, especially in the toe area. I know this from experience. Russell Moccasin's make a great desert/safari hunting boot if you have the time and money. A light wool sock and a synthetic liner will work great down there. Surplus jungle fatigue pants or summer weight fatigue pants work great and are cheap. Enjoy the hunt!

Re: boots and clothing for desert hunt

I just bought a pair of kenetreks boots they are very expensive but are awesome, comfortable and have excellent support, I also have the Sitka asent pants I wear when i bow hunt in Montana they are hands down the best light weight pant around IMHO.

Re: boots and clothing for desert hunt

Is your tag in central NM? If it is, some of that country is hard on boots (lava rock), so whatever you get it better be tough. I live in that area and it can get hot that time of year. Also, rattlesnakes are an issue in central NM. Is your tag on range or off? Congratulations and good luck

Re: boots and clothing for desert hunt

Congrats on the tag!!! For boots i +1 NMpistolero. I would stay away from soft soled boots as they will not stop rocks from pressing on your feet. I like the North Face zip off's for pants because they are light weight, tough and are breatheable. not fancy but they work for me. I like pull over 3d leafy jackets. i can adjust my non camo clothing to fit the weather and pull on the leafy top when i begin stalking. I too would opt for snake guards.

+1 more for Danners. I wear my USMC issued Danners (hot or temperate, doesn't make much difference to me) when I go home to Las Vegas.

You will probably want something a little lighter and better breathing than the 8" combat boots, but I am sold on Danner boots. I look to them first because I know it's going to be a good boot.

Re: boots and clothing for desert hunt

Congrats on the tag (And kill I'm hoping, being the tag was for may)
But for anyone else headed that way, GET HARD SOLED BOOTS!
The veg out there hates you and wants to stab you! I've seen a MRAP and two HMMVs lose tires to the nail/spike like thorns. No lightweight, high speed boots will save your feet.
Take heed,
-Sons
