New to the bolt gun game ....so I’ve got my optic on, a vortex viper 5-25 x50 manual says 70 total moa in the turret, 20 moa rail & 20 on the in the rings total 40. Going for a mile shot. Tonight I did a bore sight in to just see...I got a zero! So you Guys in the know....by getting this bore sight at 20 feet will I be able to get a zero at 100 - 200 yards ?

assuming that your 100yd zero would equate to having 0 minutes in the mount, 0 minutes in the rings and the scope optically centered (35min each way)..... bear in mind this would be a rare occurrence, but we need a starting point...

then once you have added your 20 minutes in the mount and 20 more in the rings, for a total of 40... then your zero would be 5 minute past what your turret can adjust to. ie, at max elevation on the turret, the point of impact will be 5 minutes above the point of aim.

to make things worse - most rifles that I have seen, require at least a little dialing up from optical center to get a 100 zero. so if yours needed say 5 minutes of up instead of optically centered, then you will be stuck with a 10 minutr high point of impact at max turret travel at 100yd

theres a thought.... 1mile isnt so simple.... what round are you shooting?

assuming you get the 5min high impact@100 for a zero, you have 70minutes of useable elevation (but because of other factors, probably less (eg the further away you get from optical center, less likeley to get repeatable linear adjustments, more finnicky focus/paralax, chromic aberation and so on).....

very quick check of my ballistics software suggests a 6.5cm shooting hornady 140gn eldm's at 2700fps, you will need somewhare in the vicinity of 85minutes elevation....

for a 308winny shooting 168gn matchkings its worse.... like 130moa above zero.....
