I'm planning on putting together a 6mm arc with a barrel between 10 and 12". I've never fired anything with that short of a barrel and don't know what to expect. Would a muzzle brake make it more pleasant or increase concussion? Unfortunately, suppression is not an option, and I may have to pin and weld, so I have to make up my mind before I can try it. This is mainly a "just because" project. Plinking and hunting if velocities will allow. I imagine doing a fair amount of prone shooting with it.
Does anyone have any wisdom to share?
I've shot 10.5" and 11.5" barrels with a muzzle brake.
A muzzle brake didn't bother me, as I have hearing protection on, & shoot a 50BMG, where a blast and concussion are significant.
The 6 ARC is a light round no brake is no big deal, even for sensitive types, or put an a brake, with hearing protection and get used to it...your choice.
Pin and weld no big deal either, it's just a choice... something I probably wouldn't do again...just get a 16" barrel.
One could just get a 16" barrel and bore out the rifling in a lathe and make a moderate blast can / brake...or make a barrel extension on your lathe like the one pictured to get to 16" then pin and weld.
Odin used to make 5.5" bsrrels with an aluminum shroud pinned on to bring it to 16".... I had one, it was light, but needed to bore the barrel nut to fit over the aluminum shrouded barrel, and had to rechamber it, as it was chambered with a worn reamer and would not chamber all ammo but only undersized bullets would fit the chamber.
So its hard to recommend them to the average shooter.
And you can put an available extension on a short barrel, bring a 10.5" to 16"
