Hey guys, not much to this one other than I needed a brass catcher so I didn't have to chase it down and I wanted it to be portable. Those little bags suck in my experience, so I made something else using chicken wire, PVC pipe, a Mic stand, velcro and plastic ties.

The pictures are pretty self explanatory, but show me your solutions as well. The prototype of this is done but I'm gonna make some revisions to make it fit in the soft case I had lying around. It's damn close to fitting now, and only weighs about four pounds. Also any feedback is helpful, but I'm pretty sure I know what I want to do with it.

Showing how well it worked, I fired around 300 rounds into it over two days with no problems or missing brass.

This is how you take it down, you take the velcro sides off and they fold under, then at the back of the catcher it disconnects and folds under as well.

All folded up and the stand retracted.

Put away for carry. The stand sticks out a little but I'll have it fixed soon enough to zip up all the way.

Anyways, this will fend off the brass vultures and people complaining about being hit in the face with brass, so I'm happy. Any other semi- owners have any interesting ways to combat this range problem?(other than not going to a range...)

You're damn straight! Right now I'm doing a little load development trying to push them fast enough to reach a thousand out of the 18" barrel, but then it's going out to some private property for some real shooting.

Granted Vortex sends out the next wave of FFP viper PSTs any time soon...

It works quite well. Only problem is every time when I go to the range, people think that I bring along a pizza. LOL. </div></div>

I wanted something like that but the range I go to's benches don't allow much room to the right side of my elbow, and one like that would interfere with where I normally put my ammo.

I had it up front to read the labels easier this time though. Mine's a little cheaper too, but a few dollars don't really matter.

But yours smiles to brighten your day...

Re: Brass catcher project, show me yours

I bought the $10 UTG brass catcher from CDNN, it wraps around the handguard with velcro and sits in front of the ejection port, it works great, used it on 2AR 10 and 3 grendels and many dif 223 with no issues. It is also very very compact.
hop this helps

Hehehe.....my kind of engineering there! Glad I'm not the only one.

To the OP: Nice set up and well thought out.

Re: Brass catcher project, show me yours

Very nice "engineering". Looks like you did a top notch job putting that baby together. I've been thinking along the same lines, because my Sigs all throw brass 25'-30'. No joke...it's ridiculous trying to pick it all up when it's in the grass, or cracks, etc. Fortunately, it didn't take long to figure out anyone that wants the brass is usually happy to do it and keep what they pick up. I don't reload, so when I pick it up myself, I end up leaving in the brass tray for someone who does. Thanks for the post.

Re: Brass catcher project, show me yours

Well. Mine isnt quite same, but same purpose and it works.
Have tried many cheaper ones in past, but none of them really worked out.

Ended up with Brugger&Thomet QD model for my 7.62 AR.
After year of using it, still very happy with it. It mounts in handguard rail. Not cheap but very good. It has a hinge, fast to turn aside 90 deg angle if needed

Re: Brass catcher project, show me yours

I just simply drape a Shemagh over me and the weapon. It blocks glare in the scope lens and catches brass all at the same time.

p.s. it provides some shade also.

That is a nice set up and I like the way it folds nicely. I just drape over scope as well. But again nice work.

The chair is classic I love it.

Re: Brass catcher project, show me yours

Adician, very nice and practical set up. I have tried brass catchers that attach to the weapons themselves and had problems with the brass bouncing back into the ejection port causing a stoppage. My HK-91s throw the brass at least 25 feet away and make it a real pain to find the spent cases. Are you going to be producing and selling these brass catchers?

Sorry JFK52, the cost of materials and the cost of my time just don't make it feasible, but I'll tell you that all the hinges need to be female (soft/fuzzy) velcro and all the walls need to be male/female to get one like mine to work correctly. You can get the materials for cheap at lowes, but it'd be easier to get a pre-built one.
