Re: Brass FC vs RP
For my M1 Garand in 7.62 Nato/308:
Collected range brass. Win, FC, RP, PMC and CBC. I pass the LC and other reloadable mil brass to buddies.
I've weighted them. Tried to get a feel for which is hard or soft and so far I've only tried loads in the FC and RP.
The FC is the heaviest (175gns+) and hardest to resize.
The RP is the second lightest (~165gns) and easy to resize.
The same velocity requires 1gns more powder in the RP brass.
I did not pursue more load development with the RP yet, it was my "feel" for the brass after a small batch of 40.
I go with the FC just because that's what I want.
My first batch for both was very inconsistent in neck seating tension. Something I would expect from range brass. The ES was over 100fps.
The next batch of FC was treated to the full case prep including annealing and turning. Now the neck tension is much more consistent. SD was 15 from a semi auto with the slowest load I was willing to make. No other load development yet.
I like FC for my 308
I like RP for my 300WSM but shoot my lots of Win with great success. Again the FC and Nosler are the heaviest. 1gns difference in load for the same velocity, this time the RP has less than the Win
I like Hornady for my bolt action 223. Has more room for my 28.5gns load of Benchmark behind V-Max 40gns. 3750fps.
I like Nosler and Lapua for bolt action my 260 but have very limited testing with others. I run the Nosler at 2750 and the Lapua at 2900ish (don't have my notes).
I think it depends on the loader, rifle and load but for the 308 I use the FC before the others.
IMHO: Run what ya got or if you have to buy new go RP for budget or top of the line (Lapua, Nosler, etc) if you are after ultimate accuracy.
