I'm new to reloading and im looking for some tips and pointers on resizing. I wanted to know if I should be using a full length resizing/ decaping die on once fired .308 brass for my bolt action savage.
Also same question for my once fired 6.8 spc brass from my AR platform.

Thanks in advance for all who respond with tips and coments.

Re: Brass resizing question .308 and 6.8spc

If the brass was fired in your .308, probably not, neck sizing should do and potentially give better accuracy thru minimum headspace, if it was fired in something else, full length it the first time. For the 6.8 for maximum feeding reliability you'll want to full length size them everytime.

New guy to the forum here, but I've been reloading the 6.8 for two years now. I use a full length resizing die (RCBS) and get reliable feeding through my two ARs. I also trim them to length. Which ARs are you running them through? Components, etc.

Lord any new brass or once fired brass from any rifle other than your .308 you need to FL. Once you shoot it through your .308 then you should only neck size (for greater accuracy). After 4-5 sizings, or when you deem appropriate, should FL it again.

AR= always FL

Any other questionds feel free to PM me

Re: Brass resizing question .308 and 6.8spc

Thanks for all the input. Sorry for the lack of background info all the brass is once fired by me in my rifles the .308 is a savage arms 10 bat/s and the AR is a J&D 6.8 upper with a J&D lower. I recently received my hornady lock and load kit I'm currently using hornady dies for the 6.8 and I got an rcbs competition die set for the .308 so far I only have the hornady reload book that came with the kit and the ABCs of reloading book and of course the hide for info and help

Lord Jim: I have Remington 6.8 brass and the CCI br2 LR primers work perfect but I also have hornady 6.8 brass with the small rifle pocket and I keep getting primers in cockeyed and end up smashing the primer I have not found a SR primer that will fit in my harnady brass have you had any experience/trouble with hornady brass or could it just be me and SR primers don't get along

Re: Brass resizing question .308 and 6.8spc

The general rule of thumb is neck size for a bolt gun but also about every 4-6 loads check to make sure that the case will chamber right. You don't want to end up loading a few rounds and they don't fit I have done it in my beginning years of reloading.

For AR's you want to FL size to ensure proper fit every time. This is the case for semi auto rifles.

The Hornady has primer pocket crimps, so they need to be swaged before priming. It's decent brass. The Remington brass is easy to reload but you won't get max performance out of it. The gold standard for 6.8 brass is from Silver State Armory. A little pricey but worth it. I generally avoid the non-SSA brass now. Is your AR's chamber SAAMI or spec 2? The spec 2 chamber allows some hotter reloads with less pressure. I currently load Hornady 110gr Accubonds to 2800 fps out of my Bison Armory 20" upper and 115gr SMKs to 2700. If the twist rate in your barrel is 1 in 11" or slower, you should be able to reach that easily, just work up with RL10x.

Re: Brass resizing question .308 and 6.8spc

I full length size everything, bump the shoulders back .001-.002" and should give you plenty of brass life. Just my preference.

Re: Brass resizing question .308 and 6.8spc

I FL size every time regardless. I actually neck size first, then FL size, anywhere between .001 and .003" of bump. Varies from case to case.

Re: Brass resizing question .308 and 6.8spc

what is the best/ easiest way to remove the primer pocket crimp in hornady 6.8 brass is there a tool that some one would prefer over another or do all basically work the same?

Re: Brass resizing question .308 and 6.8spc

You could get a crimp removal tool but what I do is use the case mouth chamfer tool to remove the crimp material from the primer pocket. Works fine on 5.56 brass..
