Can someone explain to me if there is a way to break in the barrel?

I was at a range over the weekend shooting my LMT MWS 308 for the first time.

I was told by one of the people at the range that I am supposed to shoot 1 round and clean the barrel, repeat this 5 times; shoot 5 rounds and clean the barrel, repeat this 5 times.

I have not done that on any of my rifles, and it kinda concerned me...

Thank you in advance,

Eric

Fuck that! Just shoot it. I've been there and done it which was a waist of my time and probably did more damage to my gun than good.

I see people doing this at the range from time to time and I just say to myself, "Fuck that".

Re: Breaking in the barrel

Lots of fans on both sides of the break-in debate. Being nowhere an expert I'll take my advise from the people who make custom barrels and rifles and follow GAP's break-in instructions.

However, using a good bore guide, one-piece rod, proper brushes, and solvents is extreamly important. If your kit came from WalMart you're probably better off not breaking in a new barrel.
