BREAKING: Shooting at Tucson AZ Amtrak station. Possibly drug arrest gone bad. DEA agent + perp dead. 3+ wounded

UPDATE: ARTICLE:

Some eyebrow-raising questions in that publication though...

----------
A regional task force of DEA agents and Tucson police officers had boarded one of the cars to do a typical check for illegal money, weapons and drugs. It's a common occurrence at all transit hubs, Magnus said
----------

I am not sure how these protocols go, perhaps somebody with more knowledge can clarify, but I am almost certain that dedicated teams of DEA agents and local police do not just conduct random sweeping searches of intra-USA transportation unless there is a tip that illegal activity is confirmed to be taking place. I have rode Amtrak numerous times in the past and have only seen Port Authority Police at NYC's Penn Station. And they were just guarding the station, platforms, and tunnels... Going by the details of the boarding, arrest of one of the perps, and the second perp opening fire, it appears that LE had already gotten a solid lead that this particular train has contraband and traffickers on board... Probably cartel affiliated.

Fucked up situation through and through as train was filled with passengers too.

Drug cartel using Amtrak?
There's plenty of truck drivers from Mexico on our roads to pick up packages and deliver anywhere in the country.
I am wondering about the security of Amtrak. How did these two get guns on the train?

Is it illegal to take a gun on a train? Thought that was just planes.
Per the amtrak website:

Firearms and Ammunition

Rifles, shotguns, handguns, starter pistols, BB guns, compressed air guns (including paintball markers), ammunition, taser guns

Carry-On: Not allowed
Checked: Allowed - up to 50 lbs. and 62" x 17" x 7"

Amtrak accepts reservations of firearms and ammunition for carriage between Amtrak stations and on Amtrak trains within the United States that offer checked baggage service. Thruway Bus Services are not included. The following policies are in effect:
  • Notification that the passenger will be checking firearms/ammunition must be made no later than 24 hours before train departure by calling Amtrak at 800-USA-RAIL. Online reservations for firearms/ammunition are not accepted.
  • The passengers must travel on the same train that is transporting the checked firearms and/or ammunition.
  • All firearms and/or ammunition must be checked at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled train departure. Some larger stations require that baggage be checked earlier. Please contact your departure station for more details.
  • All firearms (rifles, shotguns, handguns, taser guns, starter pistols) must be unloaded and in an approved, locked hard-sided container not exceeding 62" L x 17" W x 7" D (1575 mm x 432 mm x 178 mm). The passenger must have sole possession of the key or the combination for the lock to the container. The weight of the container may not exceed 50 lbs./23 kg.
  • Smaller locked, hard-sided containers containing smaller unloaded firearms such as handguns, taser guns and starter pistols must be securely stored within a suitcase or other item of checked baggage, but the existence of such a firearm must be declared.
  • All ammunition carried must be securely packed in the original manufacturer's container; in fiber, wood, or metal boxes; or in other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition. The maximum weight of all ammunition and containers may not exceed 11 lbs./5 kg.
  • The passenger is responsible for knowing and following all federal, state, and local firearm laws at all jurisdictions to and through which he or she will be traveling.
  • All other Amtrak checked baggage policies apply, including limits on the number of pieces of checked baggage, the maximum weight of each piece (50 lbs./23 kg).
  • Firearms/ammunition may not be carried in carry-on baggage; therefore, checked baggage must be available on all trains and at all stations in the passenger's itinerary.
  • At the time of check-in, passengers will be required to complete and sign a two-part Declaration Form.
  • BB guns and Compressed Air Guns (to include paintball markers), are to be treated as firearms and must comply with the above firearms policy. Canisters, tanks, or other devices containing propellants must be emptied prior to checking and securely packaged within the contents of the passenger's luggage.

Sunday afternoon a "high ranking cartel member" was captured in a raid of a cock fighting ring in my AO. Word on the street is the biggest cluster fuck of the day was Peta showing up to observe or protest the euthanasia of the birds. A lot of gov agencies were involved it sounds. Curious if there was any connection or just coincidence.

I was thinking their "policy" may not hold in Texas... but ran into this...

Federal “Gun Free Zones”

This is a very short list of facilities and locations that are protected by the Federal government. They include Department of Defense facilities (military bases), recruiting outposts, courthouses, and prisons. Amtrak is also covered. Oh, and don’t forget about the Post Office. Violating these “gun free zones” comes with potential federal charges.
I don't ride it.. so I guess it doesn't matter too much. Federal dollars do keep this running with all the union pay and positions. :(

It's done all the time. Florida to NYC is heavily used. But in recent years, the gangs/cartels have started using rural stations near larger stations. Here in Maryland, the New Carrollton, BWI and Aberdeen stops have had a lot more DEA action in recent years. There used to be at least 1 take down every week at the Baltimore Penn Station.

My peeps at Amtrak say that this is the first one where shots were fired at any type of good guy. Seems like this time, they were loaded for bear.

Sad story.

When a firearm is check in, that package is escorted to the baggage car. HOWEVER, not many short haul trains have baggage cars, so you're restricted to the long haul trains. Doesn't do any good from Washington to Boston in the Northeast Corridor.
