Gunsmithing brownells multi vise

Re: brownells multi vise

This is the kind of vise that we had on our benches at school and I now have them in my shop.

They have served me well as a general purpose gunsmithing vise.

I have other standard cast iron boat anchor style vises with the removable soft jaws from Brownell's, but this is the one I use the most.

Re: brownells multi vise

How well would that work for say, tighting the slide on a 1911 which i do from time to time. doesnt look like i will be able to put much torque on it or "feel" how much torque i am applying. but that being said, i can get a cheep chicom for that.

tell me a bit more about this vise, i am VERY interested the looks of it are just throwing me off a bit.

Re: brownells multi vise

The vise I have came with wooden jaws that have urethane pads (replaceable).
I have considered making some from Aluminum when the urethane pads need changed.

I have cranked it down pretty tight, but with the padded jaws I don't know about squeezing a pistol slide?

It's great for holding stocks, barrels, oddly shaped things.

We had them at school because we had to make wooden rifle stocks from semi-inlets and they are perfect for that.
I've just gotten so used to it that I tend to use it for nearly everything.

I've tightened the slide on a 1911 using one of the above mentioned vises; I just used Power Custom Slide Rail Compound Clamp to do it. An extra piece, but it's not out of the question to have two vises on the bench.

same thing, way cheaper. </div></div>

The one from Brownells is made in the USA. The one from MidwayUSA is made in China. They look identical, but the materials are poor in the Chinese made copy. It is the same quality you would see in Harbor Freight tools.

Re: brownells multi vise

I have tried the Brownells vise and it's not rigid enough for me.

I have used a vise like Redcreek showed for 25 years now and it is by far the best vise I can find for stocking and all manner of handwork. They are very steady and I take the jaws and mill the teeth off with a carbide mill and then use whatever padding is best (lead, copper or cork).

BTW Grizzly sells the same vise for $80. I checked one last week and it was very smooth locked up properly.
