I have an AR-15 with a target barrel I want to begins some long range shooting with and was wondering what suggestions does everyone have for a good low budget scope? I'm wanting to do shooting up to around 600 yards. I would like to get a mil dot scope and need it to be good but not expensive. The cheaper the better. I'm not doing any competitions I just want to begin to get into the sport and stretch its legs. I have already done some searching in the forum just looking for personal opinions on what others would do.

My definition of low budget is probably different than your definition of low. Be more specific.
For me, the most inexpensive scope I would ever recommend already has been above. SWFA SS 10x42 rear focus. Find one used in the optics for sale forum.

Just please don't go to Wal-mart and buy one of the off-brand 30 dollar scopes hanging on the wall next to the BB guns

One more solid vote for any of the fixed power SS scopes (take your pick of 10x or 16x...no need for 20x for your desired shooting). Buy new, or save some money and find a used one for sale. Several have been up in the optics for sale section over the last few weeks...all in great condition for very reasonable prices.
Also, if you want to go even cheaper but still have a decent scope...find a closeout deal on one of the Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10x scopes for <$175.

nikon m223, it comes with a free mount at the moment. i've set up a couple of them on rifles and all are running well so far

If you really want to learn how to use a mil or moa reticle, get a fixed power or one that has matching knobs mil/mil or moa/moa. Understand that most lower-end optics, and even some higher end optics have an mil reticle with moa knobs making calculations MUCH more difficult. If I were you, I'd go mil/mil in something fixed power like the Bushnell Elite 3200 Mil/Mil version. Think less than $300.

Nikon 2-8x32 M223 -or- Leupold 3-9x40 Mark AR , both about $350. Or for a bit less, Burris 3-9x40 Fullfield TAC 30 Tactical $300 on sale at SWFA.
