After lurking a round a while Ive noticed a trend in the budget scopes. Most of the time the ones with good reviews are

Falcon
SS
Nikon buck master / monarch
Bushnell 3200s

also every now and then the millet trs and wonder optics get a plug.


The application for the scope would be a samr style rifle based on a Larue tactical upper and lower, some nice triger, A2 butstock and a bipod. Shooting would be mostly under 300 yds but hopefully out to 500-600 one day.

The falcon Im lookin at is the 4-14 Mil/mil ffp. ~$400

The SS 3-9 variable. These seam to be nice scopes, but 600 for an SS is a little... ugh.

Nikon monarch 2.5-10 MD, 3-12 BDC, or 4-16 MD and then adding target turrets.

The bushy is the 5X15 tactical, but I think 5X for the lowest power is a little high.

What about the new 5th gen wotac?

The millet is to heave and really just not in the running.

So what do you guys think would be the best scope for me? Did I miss something in the $500-$600 and under range?

My only experience with glass is an old Simmons 3-9x42, and the glass quality on it is good enough. But a little better low light performance wouldn't hurt.

If the simmons is your only experience with scopes then it is time for you to make the step.

You will find the scopes that you have listed are probably more than adequate for your needs.

When you have mastered one or more of the above then move on to the next level and so on.

buying a high dollar / high performance scope that surpasses your needs or skills only makes good deals for the "hawks" lurking the classified ads when you decide you don't need it or need the money...

look for a used nikon monarch ucc. You can get them for a couple hundred bucks. Buckmaster is also a good scope. Lee

Ill probably end up with the falcon. Some say the falcons have so-so glass, anything to it? Do they fit in a Laure SPR?

Another brand you might consider is Meuller. These are very reasonbly priced and have a solid selection of options. I have the tactical 4-16x50 and it's a hell of a scope for around $200.

If your SPR is 30mm, yes.

I still think Falcons to be a too young a brand to drop my money on. Their only benefit over the SS scopes is the matching adj/reticle (which is a big plus, but the SS scopes have a long history of working right). Bushnell variable don;t have the adjustment in the 3200 series to take you out long.....
