Maggie’s Bugatti hits 246 in Idaho

while impressive, Callaway hit 254 in the late 80's in a corvette with only about 875 or so hp.
he drove the car from ct to Columbus oh to the test track went 254 and drove it back to his shop.
and it was done with old turbo technology (buy todays standards) with a sb 383.

Not a huge fan of the Bugatti but still a very impressive car from the factory, can't imagine modding one. Where did you come up with 224 for the ladies serve? I only seen 131.

That thing sounded like a jet aircraft going by!

There used to be something similar in Utah years ago (still might be).
They closed down a section of highway for a charity fundraising event. The troopers clock you on radar and your "fine" for the speeding went to charity.
I remember one guy in a Ferrari lost it on a turn and totally demolished his car, not much left except for him sitting in the rollcaged basket in his 5 point harness. Not a scratch on him.

That Hennessey Venom is a slick ride, it's a shame its based off of a British car (as fine as the Exige is). I guess the amount of work and change they do to it justifies the patriotic fervor.

Structure from the windshield/a-pilars to the rear fire wall is from the Lotus, everything (everything) else is different and/or re-worked.

It goes to show that something can be done by an average guy who liked cars growing up was able to build a car with limited funds and R&D budget, get it approved with transportation authorities, beat the commonly thought of king of consumer automotive top speed who has a huge budget, and be purchased by the same wealthy people and celebrities who would buy a Veyron after years of chasing his dream hoping it would pay off.

I agree completely. It is a fantastic car, one I would love to just sit it yet will probably never even see in person. It's just a shame (to me) that so much engineering and design went into such an amazing setup, yet it still "looks" like a Lotus. I just would have personally like to have seen a new, one-off design body (something like SSC did with the Ultimate Aero, or Saleen did with the S7 after years tuning Mustangs). But who am I to say, I build rifles, not cars.

The need for speed!

I have driven faster but I had to do it in my airplane because I had my license suspended going too fast in my 1967 Corvette.

Dynamometer tested on a Sun meter at pegged the needle at 660HP very quickly.

The red line was 8,500 after Baldwin Motion redid the engine right from the factory.

Need for speed...Get a plane...

Phez,

There has been a mention of another redesign. Not sure when or if it will happen, but I was told it would be a complete redesign of the body. Most likely for the same reasons you state.

You have a Baldwin Motion car?

Long story short...YES! and the sucker was fast, real fast!
Porter Chevrolet in Newark, DE owner wanted his son to go to college so he offered him any car that he wanted if he would agree.
His son ordered a 1967 L-71 Vett and had it sent to NY to Baldwin Motion to have it rebuilt at a total cost of over nine grand.
I got the car third hand after he blew my doors off while racing him with my Dodge 440 magnum.
He was getting married and I was getting divorced, so I paid 2,800 dollars and mad a trade.

I had a tachometer that showed a red line of 8,500 and a yellow line marked at 7,500 rpm's.
It would be good to exchange info with another L-71 owner to see if they had the same car.
The Sun Dynamometer pegged in a flash at over 660 HP.
The speedometer went up to 165 and could get there in two blinks of the eye!
Both front tires came off the ground in second gear by about four to six inches.
It cost me my drivers licenses. and the loss of a good job.
That is why I took to the skies...

not calling you a lier walt,(its been awhile since you been in that car) but pulling the wheels banging 2nd gear in that era vette would more then likely having you sweeping the rearend and or half shafts up
and putting them in a bucket and you walking home. they where notoriously weak, unless baldwin did some serious upgrades, and you had slicks.
btw i hade a 68 it did run well, and when you lay in to them they squat pretty hard giving the illusion of the wheels in the air.
and you will know when they are off the ground, the steering gets real easy:).

I caught one of the UK Episodes of TOP GEAR and they had Captain Slow drive the 1200 HP version....

Some Stats.....
At 248 mph the tires will last 37 miles.... Road friction eats them up... (car will do 268, but no tire stats at that speed)

Oh - the tires are not ordinary tires ~$25,000 per set

26.4 gallon tank - 2-3 mpg at speed

So you could speed up and then go 52 - 80 miles on a single tank- but you would you have to stop at 37 miles to replace 25k in tires

I love the fact that they build these cars!!!!!!!!!

So impractical - So Awesome

Does the Veyron have the "poster" appeal of the Lambo?

Now we're talking! That look sway better than the old Venom. I just wonder what all those weight savings do to the comfort of the car. I know its a moot point in a vehicle that can potentially hit 290 mph with 1400+ bhp, but that's one of the things that made the Veyron so incredible was the fact that you could drive at 250 mph from NY to LA (figuratively of course, as you'd spend just as much on tires and gas for that trip as you did on the whole car), and be comfortable the whole drive. They used to talk so much about how you could drive the Veyron all day long and not get any of the ache's and pains that can come from driving a hyper car, and how stable and easy it was to drive at 250 mph. I'm just curious how the Venom F5 relates. But again, its a moot point. $1.2 mil for a car is ridiculous, and there are very few people who will spend that kind of money and then actually drive it and put it to the test.

Bugatti claims the Veyrons are SO EXPENSIVE to build, they lose more than 4 million Euro (~$6 1/4 million) on every one they sell. VW must have to sell 50,000 Beetles to subsidize the losses from the sale of ONE Veyron. No wonder they're phasing it out.

Those high-tech supercars are nice and all, but truly the fastest "street" car is:

FASTEST STREET CAR IN AMERICA - Tom Bailey's 217 MPH '69 Camaro! - YouTube

And it does that in 1320 feet, give that car some better aeros, taller gearing; and theres not much that could touch it flat out.

Fastest door-car(not a funny car or dragster) in the world of drag racing by all accounts, 0-221mph in 3.7 seconds using only 660ft of pavement using north of 4000 horsepower:

Pair this:
PLR 526/572 481X 4000+ HP - Pro Line Racing
With this:
PLR 4000HP Twin Turbo EFI Package - Pro Line Racing
.....and the above car is what you get.

Underground Racing can suck it, heres what a roughly ~600whp Turbo Busa will do with aeros as good as a supercar(RIP Mr Warner). Id say this bike could have pretty well done 265mph or so with stock fairing in the standing mile:

Bill Warner 311 MPH - YouTube

Ill admit though, UGR has their shit together. When it comes to the fastest car that you can comfortably drive around on the street, Underground`s Lambo Stg. 2R and Audi R8 Stg. 2R cars are undefeated, 1800hp supercar that is made to be street-driven:

As I noted above though, if there was a rider as crazy as Mr Bill Warner(may he rest in peace; died doing what he loved) with a street-legal ~600whp Turbo Busa, I think we would see Underground meet their match. Ive got a few other ideas on how to take them down; Ford GT Twin turbo with the appropriate amount of power should be able to do it as well:
