I have an older Winchester Model 70 in .243 and want to build an accurate mid-range target rifle mostly for F class shooting. I would go out and buy a Rem 700 action, but that would just cost more money. What are your thoughts on building a target rifle in .308 off of my current action? It is a post-64, so it doesn't have the Mauser extractor. What would some of the pro's and con's be for using it to build off of vs. a Rem 700 action? I don't have the funds for a custom action.

Thanks for the replies.

I have two Winchester 70’s built by GA Precision. My .243 is a DBM, in a Manners stock and I also have a pre-64 built as a dual purpose Prone/F-Class rifle in 6.5-284. Both shoot great. It can be a little harder at times finding part for Winchesters as opposed to the Remington 700. Another Hide Member, Hate CA installed the bolt knobs on both of my rifles. Badger makes 20 MOA scope bases. GA Precision did a wonderful job on both of my rifles, and I would highly recommend them. There are probably other shops who also will take on a Winchester job, but you would have to call & check.

FWIW & YMMV

Thank you for the info. I have awhile to decide what I want. I'm still saving now. I'm still looking for a good smith too.

I also have an extremely accurate rifle built with a Winchester push-feed. Mine was originally a .243 as well, but it is now a 280AI that was built by Moon when he was at GAP.
Don't hesitate to use your action, they are giving up nothing to the Remington and are considered better by many.
You are not restricted to a short action caliber with your action FWIW.
Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the reply. I think I am going to move forward with the project. The only challenge I have is the rifle is a right hand bolt, and I shoot left handed. I need to find a good stock for F class that will fit a right hand action and fit me comfortably shooting left handed.
