Gunsmithing Building a sbr legally?

I'm considering building an sbr upper. Trying to fully wrap my head around how the process works. I purchased silencers on the past so I understand how a tax stamp works. From what I read you have to apply for a specific length. How would that work if I also plan to purchase a silencer? Does it have to be perminant? Can I still switch out the uppers on this lower? I want to fully understand the lrocess8before I even get started. Thanks.

You register the lower as an SBR. When you fill out the paperwork you tell them a caliber and barrel length. I gave them the length it is 99% of the time. You are allowed to make temporary changes to length. The suppressor is completely separate unless you are planning on pinning the suppressor to one barrel.

The form was written by someone who had an 1800's view of firearms and you needed a blacksmith to change barrels, so they made a form that doesn't consider the possibility that barrel length could be changed easily.

Fill out the form based on a length you plan on having.

Fill out a Form 1. There are many tutorials on how to do this online. There are extensive instructions on the last pages of the Form 1 also.

The barrel length does not matter for legal purposes as long as the SBR is registered. Just put down a length and go for it. You can change barrel lengths all you want later. I have had an ATF agent tell me to my face that they pretty much don't care as long as it has a tax stamp of the correct serial number. You will read all kinds of B.S. about the length online.

You will have to have the lower engraved with the name of the maker (your name or your trust name) and the city and state where it was made into an SBR. The lower will already have a serial number and caliber marking. Put down the serial number and caliber of the lower on the Form 1.

You can always call your local ATF office and ask questions. The agents I have spoken to were knowledgeable, helpful, and are not out to get you.

Yep just grab a lower, fill out a Form 1 and submit and throw the lower in your safe till your stamp arrives. Then have it engraved with your name or Trust name and your good to go. If your running a can you need a separate stamp for the can as well.

I swap my 10" 5.56 and 10.5" 300blk uppers between my pistol lower and SBR lower all the time with a Rugged Surge 7.62.
