My rifle is a rem700 sps tac based setup cut down to 16". Im wondering what bullet weight would be a better choice for still getting to 1000 yards. Either 175s or 155s. Im not concerned with transonic issues. Just want to know which would be more viable for this setup.

it doesnt really seem like an ideal 1000y setup , i dont think it matters which bullet you go with , the ballisiitcs look similar ,40-50 moa drop , thats allot.

I doubt you'll have enough MV with a factory Remington barrel to consider using any bullet to 1000 yards. It will depend on your MV and your Location, as in are you at least 5,000 ft above sea level to help balance it out.

However Remington barrels are notoriously slow, I bet it goes transonic in the 800 yard range. The transition properties are not going to help much. If you use a Berger 175gr you might have some random luck, but again, doubtful.

Pick the right tool for the job and that isn't it.

I have some experience with this, my kid shoots a 14.5 inch savage at 600yds and just over 900yds. She needs 4 mil to get to 600yds with a 200yd zero and 10 mil to get to 950ish. This is using a 155 SMK. Her rifle seems to shoot the 155's better at distance then the 175smk. The 155 load is hot, she shot her first f class 600yd course this summer and shot 172, 169, 179 with a 2.5-10 IOR scope she was getting the hang of it the final string with a 96 for her last 10 shots. At 950yds she does pretty good hitting a 20 inch gong. She does this for fun, the short barrel is not the best tool for the job but does much better then some people think it would. For reference her rifle will shoot 155, 175, and 208 amax bullets into .4 to .6 groups at 100yds. For some reason the 208's open up by 200yds to 4 inch groupes and the other stay sub moa. Her rifle is a Precision Carbine in factory stock, with harris bipod.

I'm not an extrmely experienced shooter to 1,000 yards, I've done it a handful of times but I just hit a 22"x22" plate twice out of five shots with my 17.5" barrel build. I was 225ft above sea level and wind was light, 3-6 mph.

My velocities were around 2530, and like lowlight said the factory barrels are SLOW. I bet you only see around 2430-2450 with a 16", maybe less. I mean that might still be enough to get there but the wind will really play with it if your able to keep it supersonic. I had light wind and it was difficult for me.

I'm thinking of switching to the Bergers if I ever go out that far again.
