Bullet drop from Missouri to montana

    How big of ballistic drop change has anyone seen going from say missouri at 1000 feet above sea level to Montana at 7-11,000ft or higher elevations? So if someone was going on a hunt and didn’t have time to go to the range at the destination will they be way off?
     
    +1 on using a ballistic calculator to see the differences. Change altitude, pressure, and temperature according to a current weather condition in both places and you'll get a pretty accurate idea.

    I go the opposite way all the time. Zero and verify dope at 8-10k feet and then go shoot matches at sea level. The kestrel figures out the difference. You likely won’t be as far off as you think assuming you have put good data into the kestrel. Gigo as they say. You do have a reliable ballistic calculator, right?

    But seriously what’s this hunt worth to you if you can’t take the time to verify zero and your speeds in the local environs?

    Most of your hunting in Montana is going to be 8000' or less. There's not many places to get above 10000', and no animals up there anyways.


    You can still shoot on BLM, state, and Forest service provided you do it safely.
    So you find a hill and shoot a rock. No need to find a range. But it's dumb to not verify zero after that much travel.

    According to JBM, using a Berger 215 gr 30 caliber bullet going 3000 fps, the difference in drop between 1000 ft and 10,000 ft is ~27 inches.
