First, if this is the wrong subforum.. I appologise. Please fix that.

So, who hand swages? Is this a lost art?

Where could a person purchase custom dies from?

Please learn me in any/all matters of this subject field. Experience, insight, opinion, fact, descriptive writings.

All things appreciated!!

Google Castboolits they have a forum on swaging. Tons of info.

They could help a fool get set up for high end swaging much like bart and the other small guys? Jlk is gone now... to better ranges.

I am interested to suit my own desires. Calibers and weights.

If you want to make high end bullets you are gonna need more help than a forum for hobbyists. Dies and presses to make really good bullets are a bit more than most will make in a regular tool room. Dies to make production quality bullets are made with Plunge/Wire EDM in full hard condition. Also at that end if you are going to make them by hand you will need a large number of presses as there is a number of steps needed to make a bullet from copper strip and lead ingots.

Basic Operations

Jacket steps:
Start-Strip
Coin
Cup
Draw (number of times to get the correct length and diameter)

Lead Core steps:
Start-Ingot
Wire extrusion
Wire cutting
Core swaging (uniform amount of material by squeezing extra out)

Bullet making steps:
Start- Drawn jacket and swaged core
Core seat
Point bullet

And if making boat tail bullets all tooling is different and can require an extra step or 2.

Thanks

at one point my friend and i bought a corbin swaging press on consignment for like $150 with dies and other stuff. we were going to use it to do 223 bullets from 22lr cases as we have a few tons of lead and can get more for free whenever we want.

ended up selling the press for a good chunk of money. just too much even to do cheap 223 plinking bullets
