Range Report Bullet Weight for Factory 700 .308 5R Milspec

Has anyone done long range testing between FGMM .308 168 gr and 175 gr rounds in a factory Remington 700 5R Milspec? I have read posts where folks say that either work well but i haven't found anyone that has actually done a comparison between the two at long range.

Past 600 you will want the 175.

The 168 might give you slightly better results at closer range but generally speaking the 175 will serve you better further out.

Also check out Southwest Ammo. Their 308 loads rock and so do the prices.

Thanks for the heads up. Any idea of the difference between their three different 175 gr SMK rounds? I see that they mention Winchester and Lapua brass. No mention on the third. Any recommendations on any of the three?

The Lapua brass is a little nicer if you intent to reload your brass. All of the loads are great an will leave you with good reloadable brass.

I shot the Win brass ammo mostly but I have shot all 3 loads and they all run great. I believe the third type of brass is the FC brass which is a little thicker like the Lapua.

If it were me, I would stick to the Win or the FC brass stuff unless your a reloader who really likes lapua brass.

Here is a good recipe (not mine credit goes to "caseyru")
175 smk
47.5 CFE223
2.828" OAL
Neck sized brass (remington)
CCI BR2 primer
brass trimmed to 2.008"

We shoot this in our Remington 5R mil spec

I had hole in hole groups with my 5r with 42.4gr imr 4064 berger 175s

My 5R works well with both the 168 & 175 FGMM with a slight preference to the 175s. Hornady 168 (Amax bullet) TAP ammo works extremely well also.

Here's a couple of my handloads.
47.5 2000MR
175 SMK 2.820 OAL
Winchester primer
Federal or Hornady match brass

Also, 43.3 grains of Reloader 15 and all the same components above works well. Both loads are easily 1/2 MOA. I'm trying to get the new Winchester & Lapau brass to do as well.
