Rifle Scopes Burris xtr2 for hunting

I am wanting to scope my new R700 in 7mag for hunting. Being outwest i need the magnification but i am thinking it may be a little bulky.
I have a 4-20 not being used and am just curious if anyone is using one?

I have a vortex viper HS 4-16x50 sfp with dead hold bdc laying around also. Any thoughts on this?

I have 3-15 XTR2 s on 2 of my best hunting rifles. I really love it! The 4-20 is a lot physically larger.

I am running a 3.5x15 XTR2 on an Encore in 45-70, Tikka T1x, 10-22 custom. I also have 5x25 on an Anschutz 17hmr. I run a Schmidt and Bender on my 260 and a Nightforce ATACR on my TRG42. I love the XTR 2's for hunting and shooting inside of 600 yards. I love them. They track and the glass is decent. I usually pick them up for 600-650 used on here.

I was using an XTRII 3.5-15 on my Tikka 300 Win. It was too bulky for my taste on a hunting rig. Got a Bushnell LHRSi 4.5-18 and it’s twice as good in the glass department IMO. Paid the same for both.

With that said. You have two scopes that aren’t being used. If I were making the decision I would compare their lowlight capabilities first and then decide whether Size/weight was an issue. If you dial elevation and windage the tracking ability maybe be a factor to compare as well. For my purposes the glass and size/weight were deciding factors.

About my experience as well (well, maybe not twice as good). LHRS is just about impossible to beat in its price/feature range. I’m hopeful for the XTRIII though, albeit that’s a different price range entirely.

To the OP: probably worth waiting on the XTRIII to see if it’s the bees knees and/or if the XTRII gets a price reduction.

Yeah, a little hyberbole in my "twice as good" statement haha. But it is definitely better.

I've killed quite a few animals here in the northwest with several XTR IIs. I have a 20x on my 6.5 Grendel, and a 25x on my 6.5 Creedmoor and 300 Norma Mag. They have all performed flawlessly in every situation.

I have no issues with the size and weight.

I hunted with my 5-25 xtrii and I liked it but it was heavier and bulkier than what I wanted for hiking around the hills.

Same experience with the bushnell. I had the LRHS and LRTS. Lighter, better glass and more suited for hunting purposes.

I have a XTRII 3-15 with 36' fov on a 7mm hunter and a PST gen 2 with 41' FOV; both are heavy in comparison to non-external turrets of minimal hunting scopes. but both I feel very confident n LR hunting

I am not sure why someone might give up a 40' of view and get a LHRSi 4.5-18 that has only 23' just seems the extra 4oz 6oz are NOT worth the reduction in FOV..

Picked up both pig and ELK (in the cooler)

FOV isn’t everything. In addition to the bulk/weight the glass quality and lowlight performance is much better IMO. I personally preferred those over the FOV given my hunting situations. (Shooting House/stands with 400+ yard shots). With that said the XTR2 is a good scope and plenty capable if it fits ones hunting style.

Sure if you’re not using your scope to spot and only concerned about long range I totally agree.

However at that point I might opt for a 5 to 25

Yeah, I agree. I spot with Binos. But I do think my next scope upgrade will be a March 2.5-25x42 ?
