Rifle Scopes Burris XTRII-anything new from SHOT 2018?

Lots of small upgrades to the Burris line up here and there, they added some military/leo stuff that's pretty neat. But nothing new for the XTR line up.

The grid reticle is still in the works. It sounds like they got one made, and changed it, so they went back to the drawing board to make sure it's exactly what they want and well designed the first time. Sky Leighton gave me an update at Shot that he wants it to be "fast and simple".

As for the XTR line up, great things are coming... they simply didn't have anything ready for the show. It's too soon to go into details, I don't have permission to leak anything. So all I can say is that changes and progress is being made, people are really going to like what they are doing.

Are they going to improve the glass any?
Not that it is terrible, but the PST 2 is noticeably better.

This strays into the realm where I'm afraid I can't divulge much. I hate to dangle a Twinkie and not be able to tell you where we are headed. But I want you guys to know that Burris isn't sitting on their hands. There's great stuff coming.

Based on the last timeline I heard, I hope to be able to answer that question in it's entirety soon. Burris has got a pretty good feel for the strengths and weaknesses of the XTR II, and they have taken feedback to heart. R&D is headed firmly in the right direction on improving the line.

Any more than that and I may get in trouble ;)

I’m soon looking for an XTR in 4-20 or 25. Mediocre glass or not.... I drive right past the assembly plant a few times a month.... I pray the get a Christmas Tree reticle!

any updates to the eliminator?
I actually got to play with an Eliminator for the first time last Wednesday. They don't allow you to use those kinds of electronics here in Idaho for hunting season, so its rare to see one. It's a very impressive optic.

I'm not certain about any updates. Im going to flag Sky on this thread and see if I can get a better answer for you. I got very little opportunity to chat with him about what's new. The booth was pretty busy and people were waiting for him. It was nice to meet Ilya Koshkin at the show this year (great guy in case you're wondering) and I jumped in on his conversation with Sky about reticle design.

So I bought a couple of the original Steiner T5Xis (5-25 scr mil). Loved them but once all the tracking test results came out I sold them. I have been seriously considering something in the XTRII line lately. How would you rate the glass compared to the T5Xi? Know this is out of scope of this conversation (pun intended) but since you were active on this was hoping you could give some details of glass coating comparisons and whatnot.

That's a tough one. I haven't gotten many opportunities to compare them. The ones I have looked through seem like nice scopes. But I've never set them down side by side as I have a lot of other brands.

I kinda "outgrew" the constant head to head comparisons that I did so often a few years ago when I first started shooting for Burris. It definitely gave me a very good feel for a lot of other scopes, and I learned a lot from it, but I also learned glass is one of the most subjective aspects of a scope. Put two scopes together and ask which has better glass and you'll get 5 different answers. ;)

Maybe someone with more experience behind the Steiner will chime in.

sorry, thought you might have been a sales rep or something, but congrats on being sponsored shooter for burris. would assume being sister companies a sales rep might have had hands on both or know some of the secret sauce in the coatings. I live in the middle of nowhere (very rural eastern ky) so purchasing something is about the only way I can get eyes through it.

Not sure if you guys can comment, but if someone were looking to scope a .22 trainer, would these new XTR options be a better fit than, say, a PST GenII (based on features beneficial to rimfire use, such as short range parallax settings, etc.)? Or can you not say? I know the current XTRII line only goes down to 50m, which knocks them out of the running for me...

For that, PST Gen2 is likely a better option at the moment. Also consider Athlon Ares for a little less money.

Personally, I sorta stick with SWFA SS 3-15x42 for this application.

I went with a Ares 2.5-15x50 and I'm really happy thus far. Haven't really put it threw the ringer yet. I will here shortly. It went on my Sako quad.

10m Parallax

I have a gen 2 PST 5-25 as well it goes to 25m. I've looked threw it inside my house and it looks pretty clear at 10m or so. I'd imagine its better with the 3-15 or 2-10?

If SWFA came out with a Christmas tree reticle in the 3-15, I’d be all over it like Cosby on the unconscious.....

Didn't mean to derail the thread w/ a "Which scope for a .22?" question, haha. Just feeling out whether I should hold off on a purchase. ;)

That having been said, the SWFA 3-15x is likely a great scope (currently have a fixed 10x and have had other SWFA optics that I was pleased with), but I'd like a holdover reticle to match my AMG, and more mag.

Either way, these XTRII hints are nice to see. :)

I would possibly be interested in the XTR 2 once again if they upgraded the glass and came out with a Xmas reticle. I purchased the XTR 2 after my gen 2 razor, follow by a Cronus. Once I saw the value in Athlon, i knew they were onto something. XTR 2 and Cronus are gone, but I do have a both Ares scopes now and they are both better better in every way than the current Xtr's unless your fixated about tube and bell measurements.

With the PST Gen 2, 3-15x44 is the best of the line, in my opinion.

Once you get down to the 2-10x scopes, I prefer the XTR II 2-10x42.

I have not tested the 2.5-15x50 Ares, but I have been using the 4.5-27x50 version and for the money it is really excellent. I think PST Gen 2 5-25x50 is better, but it also significantly more expensive.

I think your right on all accounts. Its obvious when you look through the scopes. I think the PST 2 pops more than any other budget FFP I've looked through. I had a clerk at the gun shop that said he thought the Gen 2 Pst 3-15 had better glass then the 5-25. I told him, he was crazy. Maybe he's right? It's not hard to believe that the Parallax is closer(<25y) w/3-15.

Maybe he was right?

This thread is killing me. I finally decided I wanted to put an XTR II on my Scar 17s and just needed to pick betweeen the 1-8x or the 1.5-8x and now I have to wait to see what’s new from Burris. If there’s any chance of posting pics of the 1.5-8x reticle at max and min magnification I would appreciate it. I’m trying to figure out the dua focal plane thing.

I have the 1-8x24FFP XTR and like it will a bit. If you need a scope, get one. There is always something new around the corner, so the waiting game can go forever if you let it.

Yeah, I read your review of it, I especially liked the reticle pics. I’m looking forward to your upcoming reviews of other optics in the 1-8x range.

You definitely don't want to get caught playing the waiting game. Sometimes these things can get strung out for quite some time. Speaking from experience.

Either of the 8x optics will serve you fine. The BDC of the 1.5-8 will allow you to stretch a little further using holds. Oddly enough, the first time I shot a Scar 17 it had that optic on it. The guy was using it for Heavy division 3 gun. The Dual focal plane is actually pretty cool. The illuminated horseshoe and center dot stay the same, while the reticle moves on the first focal plane.
