Re: Bushmaster gas piston AR
Piston is superior on paper only. They both shoot the same projectile out of the same barrel. They are both gas-operated systems. General Infantry has been using DI guns for over 40 years because they work. Many piston implements in the AR system are not designed or engineered very well at all and have their own nuances to deal with. Bushmaster's system comes to mind. It is made by ARES and the consensus with them is that they tend to break in less than 10k rounds, and then you have an inoperable firearm..which you paid an additional $600-$800 for over a normal DI counterpart.
Granted LWRC and POF make a decent piston setup...but again they were not designed from the ground up and are basically 'rigs' to what was intended to be a DI gun.
If you are so sold on piston flavor-aid get a FAL, AK-47, or a Sig 550.
Take my advice, save your money if you are buying an AR and do it the traditional way. If you don't like cleaning your gun get someone else to do it, or don't fire it. The dirty carrier/receiver card is the weakest argument I have heard to sell a gas piston system. Furthermore, most recreational shooters will never push their rifle hard enough to say a GP system is justified or worthwhile because they'd otherwise be out of commission with a DI gun because there is simply too much accumulated fouling for the rifle to continue to function.
However if you are sold on the Bushmaster piston upper, you can rest assured it will drop in any ar-15 lower and work just fine.
