buttstock position when shooting prone with a bipod.

I keep reading about placing the buttstock in the shoulder pocket. That makes sense if I'm shooting with my body at an angle to the target as usually done while using a sling. However if I keep my body pointing strait at the target, then if I use the shoulder pocket I have to tilt my head a lot from vertical to do that. If I keep the butt closer to my head it is out of the pocket and either I'm on top of my collar bone, (not comfortable) or I can lower drop the buttstock down so that the top of it is just under my collarbone for more comfort. However if I use the below the collarbone position the recoil force with tend to raise the muzzle more compared to having the buttstock on the collarbone which places the force inline with the shoulder's contact point.

Any solutions, other than these tradeoffs?

what stock are you using? and can you post a picture of you in position behind the rifle?

when shooting prone, either with a sling, or a bipod....you want your body straight behind the rifle, and inline with the target, you never want it angled.

regarding where to place the buttstock, honestly wherevers comfortable........you want your head in a natural position, you dont want to be reaching or arching your neckhead.

i can tell you on my prone rifle, my buttstock has a bit of outward cant, this torques the rifle inward towards my face, and allows the cheek piece to sit closer to my face.

Care to explain how you are straight behind the rifle when slung in with no other support?

gotta stretch the armies.....actually a lot easier if you have a short LOP......i generally keep mine around 12"
