Cadex Sheepdog in a Manners?

The Sheepdog has a 700 footprint. Has anyone put one into a Manners stock/mini chassis yet?

Yes. On 3 different manners stocks so far. The 4th is on it's way. I'm calling it a night but can get more specific for folks beyond what I posted below. For both LA and SA Cadex Shepheard and Sheepdog actions.

This was a Sheepdog with Impact inlet with Mini chassis.. the bolt release was fine. Worked great. Ejection port needed to be opened up big time. The area under the bolt handle was very exposed just like the the LA one below. The TL3 SA is the same results as what's below.

Here is a LA Shepherd in a TL3 inlet CIP mini chassis. The bolt release just ever so slightly was tight. But still worked. Ejection port didnt fully line up. The bolt handle cutout is much too low.

For the LA I just said screw it and bought the strike nuke with CIP chassis because I didnt want to hack it up opening the port. I was too impatient to send it back to Manners as I needed to use the rifle.. On the SA I now have my 3rd manners showing up and that is inlet for a Defiance. I'm having Tom modify the one I have outstanding at manners currently, before they ship it, and that was originally for a TL3 SA.

The KRG worked great. Plenty of room for the bolt release and also ejection port. But these chassis systems are cut much lower on the action and meant to be universal.

All of the Rem 700 clone Manners stocks I had worked. Just slight variance inbetween them and I dont have a mill to make it look nice the way I wanted. So thankfully Altus has had some in stock for me to buy over the last few months to try out.

I've just been eyeballing what ones have a shallower bolt handle cutout and ones that have larger ejection port openings and bolt release cuts. Eventually I'll get it close enough to just call it good.

Other manners showed up. This one is a defiance inlet mini chassis. The safety clears on this one without having to take any material out of the trigger pocket on the mini chassis. The ejection port looks the best so far. Going to leave it. The bolt release slight hits on the corner but doesn't bind and still functions. I may take the edge off the stock where it touches but still functions fine. Still some excess gap under the bolt handle but not as bad as the impact or TL3. Just going to run it.

Jake,

Thanks for the pics. Only fitting since were it not for our M4C conversation I wouldn't have know they had just the action. Rather than a plug and play barreled action into a chassis like my last time, I'd go build on this route. However, I doubt I have the strength/patience to facilitate another build that has a high probability of ending in regret/disappointment and the inevitable return to an all-AI inventory.

Did you try the Sheepdog? Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't. I didn't. I had one and sold it after 6 month or so. A fat bolt design in a repeater is not optimal imho. The binding of a brand new one is not a problem though. After the break in period, and with lube in the right spots, it will become smooth.

Mine are smooth as butter. Both the SA and LA. With not many rounds on them yet either. More so then the TL3 and Surgeon (dont have another here to compare that's a clone 700). I do keep it properly lubed with thin grease and its probably one of the smoothest I've used for custom actions even right out of the box. Maybe I got a good one? Only Surgeons and Bighorns for Rem700s to compare to directly, and factory 700s also. I've used Defiance and Impacts and a few others of friends, but I do not personally own those and just had limited time behind them.

If someone is an AI shooter and likes the AI actions. Any rem 700 clone is going to come up short.

My Cadex CDX-300 actions took a bit to break in, but now they are really nice. ( they are Not 700 clones) in factory guns. The Cadex Shadow I have, that bolt is super smooth and is very nice also.

What did you end up with and did you have issues with the Cadex? Feeding? Just didnt like it?

There are very little end user reviews so I'm curious as what others think.

I am using mine with a mag bolt face chambered in 6.5 PRC. No issues yet. I really like the 60 throw on these. I dont know if I can buy another action in a 90 going forward. No matter what the brand may be.

Do the Cadex actions have oversized bolts?

I hate it when companies do that, they are not solving anything and only end up inducing problems.

"But...but...muh Impact....smooth as glass...all day long" :ROFLMAO:

My theory with some of these Impact owners that are full of rhetoric and hyperbole is that they've never owned an action that had a trigger properly timed/mated to it before.

It's like a cult, but some AI owners act cultish as well ;)

That said, lots of amazing actions out there these days. The golden age of precision rifles.

They do. Left to right... CDX-40 bolt for 375ct, CDX-30 bolt for Mags, R7 Shepherd for mags, R7 Sheepdog in SA mag.

Then the second and third pic is of the R7 cadex bolts themselves. These have 4 lug bolts. The CDX actions are 3.

True dat. I favor the AI heavily but they have their cons and I can not tell you with a straight face that they are perfect. My co-worker's new AT is the grittiest AI I've ever seen and it had to be worked in like some of the current actions.

Almost too many choices and still have to make some compromises in selection.

What I REALLY want is for AI to bring this back:

With all the PRS BR fuckery and dudes shooting .223 guns, this should be a thing again...

In fact, I liked the overall rifle, a cdx-r7. Feeding was the problem. I worked a lot on it, got it as good as the design allowed I think. To get a somehow decent chambering, the cartridges needed to point upward a lot. To the point that the bottom lug was catching the shoulder of the brass on the rearward stroke. The problem was accentuated by the fact that the chamber was cut VERY sharp. The bullets got damaged a lot during chambering.

In a single shot mode, it was a very accurate rifle though. Feeding was a deal breaker for me. Proprietary firing pin assembly was a bit of concern too.

Here’s to reviving old threads, I just got a sheepdog R7 rifle currently sitting on a strike nuke which I really like. Been looking at manners stocks and am glad I saw your post about fitting. We’re there any ejection issues due to the cut out not matching or was it purely cosmetic?

Cosmetic only. Fed and ran fine for me without issue.

Yes. I’m debating on getting a Cadex barreled action and dropping it in the TCS. I already have a Cadex Shepherd and enjoy it, just wanted to try something new. Any other feedback/thoughts with your current setup?
I love it, the cadex action fits perfectly and there’s a lot of clearance for a bigger contour if necessary (currently running cadex barrel contour) I have not fired the rifle yet on that stock but I will this weekend

Wonderful to hear. Let me know your thoughts after the range session. Much appreciated!
