Camming over on a Co-Ax press?
01/08/2017
I was wondering if it's alright to cam over on a co-ax press? I use Redding body dies to set the shoulders back .001"-.002" and can't achieve that without camming over. I was wondering is this going to cause excessive wear on my press and maybe cause misalignment? Could this cause excessive runout on my case?

I called Forster for this exact question, they said no problem. I've been doing it for years.

Awesome, thank you. What got me questioning it is I read an article saying it can cause to much flex and ruin your press

I ended up taking .002 off the base of one set of dies for this very reason. Couldn't set shoulder back enough even with cam over. I've also seen folks mill a little off the top plate on the shellholder to accomplish the same thing.

I had one new die that wouldn't set the shoulder back far enough last year. Called Forster and they had me send them the die and a case fired in my rifle. They removed material off the bottom and polished it free of charge.

I don't have the means to take that off myself I wonder if my gunsmith would do it? Was it a Forster die that you sent back to them? I wonder if they would do that with a Redding die? or maybe I'll just call Redding. Thanks for the replies guys

Yes a gunsmith or machine shop can do it. May be cheaper to buy a new Forster FL sizing die for $36.99.
Call Forster, you can send them a fired case and they will ensure headspace is setup to bump perfectly, free of charge before shipping the die to you. Pretty good deal for $36.99 and I switched all my Reddings to Forster dies anyway due to reduced runout.

I use the Co-Ax with the shellholder adapter along with the Redding comp shell holders, and works great for every single caliber. Only downside is having to pull the two screws every time for switching between it and the jaws.
The upside is that you don't have to worry about any of the issues brought up in this thread.

I also bought the shell holder plate for my Co-Ax. User it 2 times and removed it. I feel it moved the rifle rounds up too high and too close to the bottom of my die before even touching the handle compared to the universal case holder that comes with the Co-Ax.

I agree. I switched all my 223 and 300blk loading to my XL650 because I got real sick of switching the jaws from small to large. Was actually the reason i bought the shell holder adapter. Worked fine for small cartridges but loading .260rem with 140g bullets it slowed me down because tip of bullet was so close to bottom of Forster Ultra Micrometer seating die....
My Co-Ax is now dedicated to bolt gun precision loading only now.

My gunsmith actually made my chamber headspace 0.005" oversize for this exact reason. He said that most FL dies don't work well for shoulder bumping the shoulder back without modifying them. Changing the headspace is simple, easy, and won't cause any issues.

Re: Camming over on a Co-Ax press?

I've never heard of making a chamber oversized because of FL sizing dies not working and I definitely never heard anyone say or read reports of FL sizing dies not bumping the shoulder back without modifying them.
I have god knows how many FL sizing dies and Fl bushing dies on the shelf and only one had to be sent to Forster because it wouldnt bump the shoulder back on a 6.5cm quite far enough.

I agree it moves the cases higher, but I guess it hasn't been a problem for me. It does address the issue of cam over if that bugs you. I just wish they had a quick change setup between the jaws and shellholder adapter. I've been waiting for some enterprising soul to come up with a solution. I bought the upgraded third party jaw holder and it has been great.I also bought the shell holder plate for my Co-Ax. User it 2 times and removed it. I would like to stick with Redding die because I use that and a lee collet die. The combination really seems to work out well. Unless Forster has a body die? Does any other company have a high quality die that just sizes the body and bumps the shoulders without touching the neck? I wonder if I called Forster if they could completely bore out the neck on a FL die so it's just set up like a body die and supply them with one of my fired cases.Yes a gunsmith or machine shop can do it.
