i have a winchester wildcat varmint 22lr i whant to do a camo job on the stock the problem is i have only done rattle can camo on synthetic stock so my question is do i do anything different with the wood stock,or can i just camo it with out doing anything special to it, its not a laminate stock so i dont think i would have to sand it,but i dont know any info would help

Re: camo painting a wood stock

As Tucker says. You can physically sand it (removes the gloss and oils your stock may have acquired) or chemically...there is a "bonding primer", or a "liquid sandpaper" that coats and chemically softens the existing surface so that your new paint will bond and not peel off later. Good luck.

Re: camo painting a wood stock

So if I sand it ,do I sand it bare or just scuff it up,and what type of brand of sandpaper do I use,and if I do the chemical thing where do I get the stuff, can I get it at wal mart

Re: camo painting a wood stock

I krylon'd a wood stock of mine some time ago, and all I did was degrease really good with denatured alcohol. Acetone will work too but it'll start taking off just about everything and make a little more work. It's just Krylon, if you don't like it, sand it off and try again.

As for sandpaper, wet sand with 220 will work just fine. I say wet sand because it'll keep the paper from getting clogged so fast, and you can watch what you're doing and see if you're removing too much material.

what he said. I did the same and it has held up very well. I havent abused the rifle but I havent exactly babied it either. Used tan as my basecoat and sponged on OD green and brown.

Re: camo painting a wood stock

Heres a little trick I've been useing on wood stocks for a while and it looks great and seals the wood also.Degrease and sand the stock, spray it with duplacolor truck bed liner. While still tacky hit it with your krylon in a pattern of your choosing, the krylon will embed in the duplacolor then dry it to the touch with a heat gun or hairdryer.Let it dry some more for about 12hrs,and it will look like a synthetic. Also be weather resistant too.
