Let's say I have a friend in-state with a rifle and can that I would like to buy. Private sale, not at a gun shop. All ATF paperwork on the can is in order.

Is the ATF paperwork the same for me? Or is the ATF paperwork only applicable for the original sale and I get the paperwork transferred to me along with the rifle and can?

I live in a gun friendly state.

You can do a Face to Face transfer on the rifle, but...

The can will have to be transferred from your friend to you with a typical F-4 transfer. Which means typical ATF protocols, F-4 papers, finger print cards, local LEO sign-off, Citizenship papers. Or you can do the Trust method.
