Rifle Scopes Canadian Optics? Super Sniper/Weaver Tactical

So I've recently discovered that as a Canadian my government is totally cool with me importing a Scope(or any other accessory) from anywhere, but that the USA thinks that apparently we're not that trustworthy. After 9/11 a law was passed that doesn't allow the export of any gun part or accessory worth over $100 wholesale.

So unfortunately I'm so far completely unable to order either of the scopes I want. (SWFA SS 10x, or Midway Exclusive Weaver Grand Slam Tactical mil/mil)

So I'm wondering if there are any suppliers of either of these in Canada, or comparable scopes that are available in Canada (hopefully for the same great prices)

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

You could have it shipped to a friend in the US, and bring it across the border yourself some day. The US is just trying to keep as much gear out of the hands of our enemies in Afghanistan and elsewhere as possible.

What about ordering one from Europe or Japan? Also there are plenty of scopes on ebay.

I am facing the same export restriction problem with trying to get a gun stock. I have been informed that going to the US and bringing it back personally puts me in breach of US law. I would like to confirm this since that was my intention.

Re: Canadian Optics? Super Sniper/Weaver Tactical

S2photo and Canuck257 you're bumping up against the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) that the U.S. Gov't has in place for exactly the reasons c1steve stated. More control over these items means the good guys aren't facing them in the hands of bad guys overseas. It all comes down to proper permits issued by the Department of State so even going south to bring them back yourself isn't going to do you any good, unless you want to see what the U.S. correctional system is like, for an extended period of time.

I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer of the items and asking about Canadian distributors. They should know who is legally selling their product up here. I also suggest this so you are purchasing items that were legally imported. Most items like scopes have serial numbers that the manufacturer can trace. If you purchase one that came in grey-market, you will probably have any warranty claims denied by the Canadian importer/warranty centre.

Re: Canadian Optics? Super Sniper/Weaver Tactical

Canuck257, many distributes have their export permits and will ship direct to Canada. McMillain, for example, have their export permits in place, and I'm sure there are others if you email them and ask. At the same time many companies cannot afford to maintain these permits on a yearly basis, so they simply say, 'No.' Without export and import permits bringing the items across the border is illegal.

Getting an import permit is free and easy:

Finding companies that have the export permits, or are willing to apply for them and do so at a reasonable rate is a different matter.

Update for any Canadians that are watching/reading this thread.

There is unfortunately no way to legally purchase a SWFA Super Sniper in Canada. SWFA doesn't distribute here, and isn't interested in getting the export license even if you get the import certificate.

Midway also can't/wont sell to Canada for pretty much the same reasons, unless you are interested in becoming a dealer/distributor in Canada (no clue what that all involves)

However upon Contacting Weaver USA they put me in contact with their Canadian Sales Rep Ross Jordan. He is being amazing enough to bring up a Weaver 3-10 Mil/Mil 40mm for me.

Apparently they are now discontinued but they still had a few in stock. So that Sale on at Midway USA might be the end of those scopes. (unless they're just retooling them for next year?)

But I'd like to thank all the companies involved for their prompt customer service, just too bad that some products aren't available north of the border. I think SWFA's products could do really well up here.

You don't have to go to the U.S. for high quality composite rifle stocks .
