It means the image has to be already hosted on the internet...
You need a link to a location, so you have to be able to open the image in a window in your browser all by itself
Seeing "Putting images in posts" same principal applies

I'm having same problem. I've put my 80x80 avatar photo with my other photos on Photobucket but it won't let me import it as a URL for my avatar. It keeps saying "wrong file type" or "wrong picture type". I'll search the "putting images into posts" topic for more but nothing has worked so far.

it does the same for me, it was no problem uploading a signature with url but the avatar did not work . i used tinypic.com

I have my own hosting package so I'll upload there and see if that works. I was trying the Hide's functionality to upload a file.

Only about 12 tries later.
Ok guys, using Photobucket, you need to select the "direct link" option when you choose which code to Share with.

Ok guys, using Photobucket, you need to select the "direct link" option when you choose which code to Share with.

Don't take a tension,Avatars are fully depended upon the sites.The dimensions are already set for many sites.Try to insert only those avatar they satisfy the dimension condition.

So will avatars only work when hosted and not a jpeg file that you upload from your hard drive? My avatar used to be fine and it was uploaded from my hard drive. In the past several months it has disappeared and I am unable to load from my hard drive. And yes it is 80x80 and a jpeg.
